I honestly don't know why we wasted one of our 28 spots on him though. The kid was going to walk on whether we gave him an LOI or not.

I'd rather see us use the spot for a grayshirt or sign and place guy. If we didn't have the 28 limit, no big deal, let the kid sign, and we still have him walk on his first year, but with the 28 limit, I think it's somewhat of a waste.

how many spots do you actually have--19?

Yes, we signed 28. We had 22 spots. The 3 grayshirts from our 2009 class and Ritter all count as part of the 28 number.

At least two of the signees were signed as walk ons, and we have a couple others that have accepted grayshirts if they don't end up qualifying. By the fall, you'll see 22 players take up scholarships, 2 walk ons, and the other 4 will be a combination of placements and grayshirts, either a 2/2 or 3/1 split likely.

Mike Thomas is on our list, but he didn't sign. That's why we have 25 on our list along with the 4 coming from our past class. Thomas is going to walk on this year without signing.

I thought recruiting had gone too far before but when they rate snappers - that takes the cake.

As to whether or not he's any good, we won't know that until we see him. I personally learned my lesson from the Todd Cox situation a while back. LB from Memphis and he had the best film I've ever seen for a LB. But he was strictly a highlight phenomenon. Couldn't play football worth a damn. Same with many other "blue chips" and "4 star players" over the years. But he is rated highly, so I wouldn't assume that he sucks at this point. His family may just have the money and he may be willing to do it to help the staff out since we were short 3 scholarships this season due to the APR score.

Thomas was actually lower rated coming out of high school than he is after prep school. I don't know what that means, but I don't think he sucks.

He'll count toward our 2011 class when he goes on scholarship next year I believe. It's definitely not a bad thing though, when you can land a 260 pound prep school DE and have him agree to walk on for a year. He could've gone somewhere else and gone on scholarship immediately, but he chose to wait a year and pay his way for a year at Ole Miss.

I don't know anything about Thomas' family's income. It may not be a real sacrifice for them to do this. But it may be. It would've been a deal-breaker in my family when I was going off to college. We just didn't have the money to pay for it.

There's got to be something Nutt likes or he'd have just helped find the kid another place to go. I guess we'll see. It'll be a mystery until he gets on the field - or isn't able to get on the field.

Looks like it's a professional coaching service that helps kickers/punters/longsnappers. I can't imagine Scout/Rivals being too far behind though.

Don't know if he improved as a player, played against lower competition, or this year's d-line class was not as deep as the prior year's. All of that is up to your own interpretation.
