LUBBOCK, Texas (April 21, 2024) – The No. 22 West Virginia University baseball team dropped both games of a doubleheader at Texas Tech on Sunday, falling in game one, 6-4, before losing 3-1 in the series finale. The Mountaineers go to 23-16 and 11-7 in the Big 12 while the Red Raiders improve to 29-13 and 12-9 in conference play. Down 3-0 after two innings in game one, the Mountaineers made it a one-run game with runs in the fourth and fifth on an RBI double from senior Kyle West and bases-loaded walk to sophomore Sam White. The Red Raiders pushed their lead back to three with a pair of runs in the sixth, but WVU got back within one in the eighth as junior JJ Wetherholt laced a two-run double. After Texas Tech got an insurance run in the home half of the eighth, the Mountaineers had a chance in the ninth as they loaded the bases with one out but a strikeout and flyout ended the game. In game two, West Virginia jumped out to an early lead with a run in the second on a single from Wetherholt. The lead was short-lived, however, as the Red Raiders scored two in the bottom of the inning. The Mountaineers had their best chance to tie the game in the eighth as West hit a double with senior Reed Chumley on first. Chumley raced around the bases and tried to score but a well-executed relay by Texas Tech cut down the tying run. Senior Hayden Cooper had a solid day in relief for the Mountaineers, throwing six innings while allowing just one run, a home run to the final batter he faced in the eighth inning. West Virginia will be back in action on Wednesday against Penn State. First pitch from State College is set for 5:30 p.m. For more information on the Mountaineers, follow @WVUBaseball on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram.
