MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (April 27, 2024) – The West Virginia University baseball team secured a series win on Saturday against Baylor, taking down the Bears, 5-2, at Kendrick Family Ballpark in front of 4,223 fans. The Mountaineers improve to 25-16 overall and 13-7 in the Big 12 while Baylor goes to 19-22 and 9-11 in conference play. Junior Kyle West reached base three times and hit his 11th home run of the season to take the team lead. Senior Reed Chumley added two hits while junior Brodie Kresser drove in two runs. Senior Derek Clark was stellar on the mound once again as he threw 8.0 innings while striking out eight and allowing just two runs. West put the Mountaineers on top in the second inning with his second home run of the weekend, a solo blast into the WVU bullpen. Clark breezed through the first three innings but faced some adversity in the fourth as the Bears put a run on the board. Baylor threatened for more, but a groundout got Clark out of a bases-loaded jam. In the fifth, the Mountaineers retook the lead with three runs on a wild pitch and two run-scoring groundouts from Hussey and Kresser. West Virginia tacked on one more in the seventh as Kresser laid down a squeeze bunt to score West from third. Baylor got one run against Clark in the eighth and brought the tying run to the plate in the ninth, but junior JJ Wetherholt made a sensational diving play on a looping line drive to his right to end the game. The two teams will be back on the field tomorrow for an early 11 a.m. first pitch.
