MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (February 26, 2018) – Following a three-home run, eight-RBI performance on Saturday, West Virginia University sophomore first baseman Kevin Brophy has been named the Big 12 Player of the Week. Brophy hit three home runs, tied for second-most in a single game team history, with eight RBIs, tied for fifth-most in the Mountaineer record books and two shy of the record, in Saturday’s 10-8 victory over Illinois. He is the third player in WVU’s 126-year history to hit at least three home runs and drive in eight or more runs in a single game. Along with his first career grand slam in the seventh inning, which broke a 6-6 tie, Brophy hit a three-run home run in the first inning and a solo homer in the sixth. The three home runs and eight RBIs are the most by a Mountaineer since Grant Buckner had three homers and a program-record 10 RBIs on May 8, 2010, vs. Notre Dame. Brophy is one of six Mountaineers all-time to hit three or more home runs in a game and one of six to have eight or more RBIs. In Saturday’s second game, vs. VCU that night, Brophy hit his fourth home run of the day. In WVU’s four games in Conway, South Carolina, he hit .375 with a 1.125 on-base percentage and 18 total bases. A Randolph, New Jersey, native, Brophy had at least one hit in three of WVU’s four games, extending his hitting streak to a team-long and career-best five games. Prior to Saturday’s game, Brophy had one career home run and five career RBIs. It was his first career multi-homer game, as he easily eclipsed his previous single-game high of two RBIs. Next up for Brophy and the Mountaineers is a series at Western Kentucky from March 2-4. First pitch on Friday, March 2, is set for 4 p.m. ET, while Saturday’s contest will commence at 2 p.m. The series finale at Nick Denes Field is set for Sunday, March 4, at 1 p.m. Season tickets and mini-packages for the 2018 season are on sale now.
