December 15, 2008

Saban visits Bumphis; decision expected soon

Chad Bumphis

As TI reported earlier today, Alabama head coach Nick Saban was in Tupelo, Mississippi this afternoon visiting with star receiver Chad Bumphis. The 5-10, 190-pound Bumphis has long been one of the Tide's top slot receiver targets.
"Coach Saban, Coach Bo Davis and Coach [Curt] Cignetti were all here today," Tupelo head coach Eric Collins confirmed to TI this afternoon. "They came by the school and then they were to meet with Chad and his mother later this afternoon."

One thing Collins picked up in meeting with the Tide coaches was that Alabama highly covets the speedy, elusive Bumphis.

"Alabama wants him really bad," Collins says. "They did a great job here today. I was very impressed with the way their coaches handled themselves. They made a strong impression. They were very classy and they're very good recruiters."

For several months it appeared that Bumphis would likely choose Alabama, Florida or Ole Miss. But with the recent hiring of Dan Mullen as the new head coach at Mississippi State, the Bulldogs now have the inside track.

"I think it's going to either be Mississippi State or Alabama," Collins says. "I think it'll be one of those two, and if I had to guess right now, I'd say that Mississippi State has the lead. Chad really loved Coach Mullen's offense at Florida and how they would use him. Coach Mullen plans to use him a lot like he used Percy Harvin at Florida and that's attractive to Chad.

"I would not count out Alabama though. They have done a great job, too. Never count out the charisma and determination of Nick Saban.

"Coach [John] Reaves at Tennessee came in trying to make a late run at Chad, but I think it's too late for them to be honest. Florida and Southern Miss are still in there, but it's going to come down to Alabama and Mississippi State and I expect Chad to make his decision within the next two weeks."
