This seems like a more reasonable explanation of what actually happened. We were definitely interested and made a big huge offer. The other fact that is certain is he choose May/Michigan over Pope/UK. He gave his reasons and you need to accept what they were even if you think the numbers we off. Plus he isn't the only high level recruit in the last two years that have said thanks but no thanks to Pope.If you’re wanting to give the kid the benefit of the doubt that he wasn’t embellishing it, I think you have to take this position:
-Pope and UK offered low 4 mill range that included collective NIL and rev share, guaranteed money
- Pope then threw out there that he thought Yaxel could make an additional 3-5M in real NIL by being a star at UK. This is NOT offered by the school, it’s just something that could in theory be possible on his own
That combines for “between 7 to 9 million” even if that’s not what’s in a contract from UK or the similar contract he got from Michigan.
I wished it wasn't true. I wish this Mark Pope era was just a bad dream. But the fact remains, that he took some less amount of money to go to Michigan and you have to accept the reasons he gave to make that decision even if you disagree with the exact money difference. You believe it because you want it to be true. You think he turned down an extra $4-5 million because you think pope is a dork.
The exact money difference DOES make a difference. If he opts for Michigan for slightly less money but feels more comfortable there, I get it. But to claim he turned down an EXTRA $4-5 million is ridiculous and will be used to make UK look bad.I wished it wasn't true. I wish this Mark Pope era was just a bad dream. But the fact remains, that he took some less amount of money to go to Michigan and you have to accept the reasons he gave to make that decision even if you disagree with the exact money difference.
I agree the main point was to praise his coach. I just don’t understand why praising his coach has to include specifically calling out UK with a specific number. Just seems like that aspect was calculated but maybe I’m wrong.I mean, not much we can probably do about that, but I also don't know if this was really a shot at Kentucky, as opposed to praising his coach and program. Did I miss more in an article somewhere?
We really need a legit AD and GM now more than ever though. We have just been getting punked left and right from all angles, for several years now.
Yeah I just don't know what purpose he has to lie. I can;t imagine Kentucky would offer $9mil. But to the people who are saying "He's $2mil off in his wording".. I don't think that means anything. Schools could very well be offering one thing at $7mil and something else at $9mil. Who knows, maybe there was some soft offer that Kentucky upped with some sort of additional considerations.
But $9mil seems very steep.
I agree we're having a bad year but no, I don't think my program sucks. I think a poser like you sucks. I do think it's BS in the first place why would he say 7 to 9,000,000 instead of just pick the higher number . This is that ******** or we would've heard about this way before. But let's look at you for a second what is with your holier than thou every UK fan but you sucks because we don't hate Pope. You're simply a pathetic piece of ****.Says the guy over here implying that Yaxel is not being honest. And I’ve been pretty forefront about Kentucky being absolute jerks to opposing fans because you can’t accept that we suck. And that doesn’t include the fact that all ya’ll do is bite the troll bait. You can’t stop!
You know damn well he was talking about college. And getting to the NBA and this was under the former coaches watch not Pope. People wanna kick us while we're down what bothers me it so-called fans are helping them kick.We can't win for losing.
Cason "Can't wait to get outta here" Wallace and now Yaxel "There's no amount o'money" Lendeborg.
No matter what we try, it fails.
But the numbers are the whole thing here.Aside from some numbers being off (and we don't know if this was a multi-year deal) I don't know how anyone can think this is a lie, not true, etc.
This thread is cringe inducing. Far too many fans are trying to write this off, when these recruiting problems have been staring us in the face for two years. Like, a player is legit telling you he favors Michigan/Dusty of Kentucky/Pope and some of you are replying with "Fake news!" essentially. Ok lol.
Pope doesn't need to respond to this. People with common sense knows this wasn't true. The ones hyping his comments up are the ones who want to see Pope fail. Players talk a big game to prop themselves up. Just like when a player adds UK to their list of schools being considered even though UK is not actively recruiting them.
The $22 million spent on NIL was reported by the Lexington Herald
"How much do UK basketball players get paid? The top question on most fans’ minds seems to be related to how much money Kentucky basketball players are actually making these days. We’ll probably never know the specific answer to that one. For now, at least, that information is not public record, nor is it available through open records requests. The players themselves aren’t offering up details on what exactly they’re pulling in to play for the Cats this season.
But we’ve still found out plenty about the team’s overall payroll … What will the collective earnings be for this Kentucky team? The payroll number for the UK basketball team this season is around $22 million, the Herald-Leader has been told. That was the number as of the finalization of the House settlement, which set guidelines for what constitutes legal payments to players moving forward, so it’s likely the collective total for the Cats will rise with any legitimate name, image and likeness deals that come their way during the 2025-26 season."

Who told them it was that number? The paper confirms that they don't know the specific amount and will never know it so they are going by someone who thinks they know how much the team is being paid. Nothing was confirmed so everybody ran with that number...
National folks have written what?First, I don't believe Yaxel for a second.
Secondly, Yaxel committed to Michigan on April 5, 2025, signing on May 27. The JMI extension with Kentucky Athletics causing the problems that national folks have written about was signed on August 11, 2025, more than four months after Yaxel's commitment to Michigan.
JMI's hurdles were not in effect for another four months. There is enough evidence that the new JMI agreement is not helping. I also believe that Pope is a poor recruiter. Two strikes...
We are hearing (from Stokes camp) that Pope is offering Stokes the same level of money that Yaxel was offered. HmmmDoesn’t matter who they played for. The NBA would have taken them straight out of HS if they had that kind of talent. I agree that Pope seems to be a poor recruiter, but Yaxel’s supposed comment is far from the truth IMO.
Considering the rumors that we’re offering Stokes a couple million more than Kansas, if he commits to them, it’s clear that players are willing to make millions less to get away from Pope.Matt Jones said that the amount Yaxel claimed he was offered wasn’t true. I figured he made it up and I’m glad that someone that knows a lot that goes on behind the scenes commented on it. Pope isn’t winning like we want him to, but he’s not bad enough that a player would turn down that much money
JMI is absolutely a major problem. The fact that a kid that we had all but signed ended up parting ways with us when it came time to iron out the NIL situation should tell you that. If that wasn’t enough, he then sent out a tweet after signing a NIL deal with Crocs saying if you see him sign nil deals then it’ll only be with companies or products that he wants to sign with and that nobody is telling him who he signs deals with.I’ve tried to tell everyone that JMI is not the problem. Never has been the problem.
That’s a made up Matt jones excuse because JMI smacked him down.
No player that thinks he’s NBA bound but just needs some polish is going to play for Pope.
Pope will get the guys that college is the best job they will ever have and he will pay the most. Touch money.
Our future pro prospects on this team will be outta here as soon as they can.
Exactly. At the time Pope was riding high with a bunch of momentum from the season and from improved draft stock of Amari, Brea, and Butler. On the other hand May had really done nothing except get hot late in the year and win the big ten tournament. But he absolutely had zero edge on Pope as far as nba development.Remember that THIS year hadn’t happened yet. At the time what Yaxel saw was a big man in Amari Williams get to display his skills (eventually getting him to the NBA). Not like Pope would have just been posting him up. 3 times less money for one year with May doesn’t make sense.
Smh. Moron Mitch hadn’t signed that JMI deal at that point.and folks still want to blame mitch and the JMI deal.....
To make himself look better. They don’t have to be rivals. Using Kentuckys name brings clout. But he likely brought it up and said it because they’re in the same bracket.Idk why dude would lie. UK is pretty irrelevant and not a rival to Michigan.
That UK's arrangement with JMI is not helping UK or Pope recruit. It is hindering it.National folks have written what?
BS! The current players seem to like him. No one, not even you, knows why we have missed out on our top targets.we are dumpster diving for terrible euro players........yet people are wrapped around whether it was 5M, 7M, or 9M. players.....anyone with a pulse.....is turning us down. common denominator.....players dont want to play for pope.
we are recruiting a 23 year british point guard that averages 8ppg from an itlian league who shoots 43% from the floor and 25% from three.......BS! The current players seem to like him. No one, not even you, knows why we have missed out on our top targets.
This guy?we are recruiting a 23 year british point guard that averages 8ppg from an itlian league who shoots 43% from the floor and 25% from three.......
sure, keep believing we don't have a pope problem.
But it’s not public money, instead NIL money all comes from private donors. The amount of NIL MONEY that players get should be available for the citizens of Ky to see because UK is a State School & players are technically state employees
Stop sucking Mark Pope’s member. It’s f*cking weird. He has no clue who you are.So we have posters like fat man and some loser rival fan from Louisville, saying mark pope is a dork, awful hire etc. Same morons are on an internet board with man titties thinking they can coach better than pope. We are without a pg which yeah that can be on pope and offering jq a spot for 2 million yeah.
Most of you are butthurt over Arkansas winning sec title. We beat them this year by the way. They had to beat Oklahoma, ole miss and vandy to win title. Whoopadee doo. Same Arkansas got killed by Florida. They got better freshmen this year but every year freshmen won't matter.
Next year we'll see if we can get the roster worked out and no injuries. This year no one has committed because maybe maybe we have still 11 players committed.
Of that is true, which I highly doubt. That shows how bad Pope recruits.https://apnews.com/article/march-madness-yaxel-lendeborg-michigan-a027582f0426503e84cd20a50fc48149
interesting article from the associated press this morning. We’ve talked about Pope’s recruiting struggles. People have said he needs to pay Stokes whatever. Yaxel on record says he turned down $7,000,000 - $9,000,000 from Kentucky
That’s terrible, in an era where guys chase the biggest bag and we have the largest by 2-3 times and they don’t want it? Shewww.Think about this he had said on record Kentucky was offering 3x what Michigan was and it couldn’t convince him. Kentucky is rumored to be offering $2,000,000 or so more than Kansas and can’t convince Stokes. We have big problems folks. Nobody wants to play for this coaching staff no matter how much they’re offered.
You are cal with your man tits. Stop sucking in real life. You like most of these couch coaches are beyond ignorant. Just because your fat, you are miserable and your opinion is irrelevant on a message board.Stop sucking Mark Pope’s member. It’s f*cking weird. He has no clue who you are.

Yeah I assume they won't. I assume people like johnson, mo d, garrison, jelavic will be gone but I have no idea...Let’s hope we don’t have 11 returning. Need about 5-6 to come back and some upgrades for the rest.
Yeah I assume they won't. I assume people like johnson, mo d, garrison, jelavic will be gone but I have no idea...
It didn't sound like he really considered us enough to know the exact amount which to me is the bigger problem. Players commit because he feels comfortable with the deal and the coach. If the money was only slightly more he still did not want to play for POPE.The exact money difference DOES make a difference. If he opts for Michigan for slightly less money but feels more comfortable there, I get it. But to claim he turned down an EXTRA $4-5 million is ridiculous and will be used to make UK look bad.
No logic in that. Rumors make it clear?Considering the rumors that we’re offering Stokes a couple million more than Kansas, if he commits to them, it’s clear that players are willing to make millions less to get away from Pope.
So at this point last year…Pope had Amare Williams go from nobody to Celtics draft pickI figured. They tried to hard. And now the book is out on Pope and his staff. Pope had no history as a recruiter and now you're seeing that play itself out.
Players can get the money anywhere and win. Your coach better be THE cool coach or you going to lose out on the first choice transfer market and first choice high School burgerboys and get fleeced in the market on your second and third and fourth backups.
This is exactly the world that Pope is now in.
Pope, u better find a better way to keep what you're paying these players under wraps a little better.
Your best angle is you have plenty of playing time available and you've developed a few NBA picks players in your two years.
But you better get your first choice transfer here in a couple weeks or these players are going to fleece you.
Mark Pope, you better have something lined up already. If you're still looking we are fudged.
Additionally, Pope was credited for advancing J Robinson’s career and making him an NBA prospect. I think DA made a personally good decision to come to UK. I don’t think he would have had the run at PG he has had at UK had he stayed at UF. His game has advanced tremendously over the course of the season. Chandler and Moreno have also improved greatly under the tutelage of this staff. So at this point last year…Pope had Amare Williams go from nobody to Celtics draft pick
koby Brea had a nice year for the suns
I mean I just don’t get that kids won’t develop at Ky
