Mullen would let him on the team ONLY if he felt like he would put forth the effort to be a champion. He would have to earn his spot and work hard doing it.

I bet both of them have learned a lot from the experience and if they had it to do all over, would change their selection. It was easy for them to select instant stardom over work harder than you ever have before to earn your spot.
