We are getting A LOT of national media exposure due to this coaching search. The rumors scaring everyone from Boise State to Florida to Oklahoma. I'm just trying to find a positive as it relates to the secretiveness of the search. I wonder if this was all part of the plan for Byrne? It sure wasn't like this DURING our last search. Afterwards of course is another matter, but right now we are on a lot of minds. So thats a plus.

We are getting a lot of local media coverage. The coverage is pretty much local based on who it has leaked we are interested in. ESPN seems to not even know that we have a coaching search going on. In the entire SEC champ. game, was the fact that we have a coaching search going on even mentioned? During the bowl selection show was it mentioned that MSU is looking for a new coach and there are some big names floating around? The only mention on espn I am aware of is when Meyer said that we had asked permission to contact mullen.

The places other than Starkville are noticing. It hasn't been on ESPN, but comparing it to the last search, we seem to be getting noticed in the Boise market, and the florida and oklahoma markets. Thats all i was saying.

we are only getting noticed in the markets where we are trying to take their coach. That is hardly national coverage. Being noticed in 3 markets doesn't put us in the national spotlight. We have had very little coverage in my opinion. I will be interested to see after we name our new HC, today, tomorrow, or whenever, what the coverage is like on ESPN.

I have to admit, that san diego state is getting more attention because they have been more open. So my initial analysis was wrong. Seems like Bryne's top secret nature is keeping us on the low.

The national media talk about Auburn, Syracuse, Washington, and BFE, but they hardly say anything about Mississippi State. It's shameful, but with our performance over the last decade, I don't blame them. Thanks Croom, you floater, please just flush and go away.

I live in the second largest media market in the country. During my 50 minute commute, I listen to Dan Patrick and Colin Cowherd. My browser has a tab open to ESPN and Foxsports on start-up. In the afternoon, I listen to LA and SanDiego sports talk stations. Fox Sports becomes the background for my dinner preparation and cleanup and I bounce between ESPN and local coverage until I settle in to watch whatever I have DVR'd.

During this orgy of sports blab, the only time I have heard MSU mentioned has been the general rant about how few Black coaches there are now that "Sly Croom has been let go..blah, blah, blah... right way...blah, blah, blah...Turner Gill." Likewise, the only time Petersen's name hit the sports news was when Bellotti named Chip Kelly his heir apparent. "Bellotti named Chip Kelly as future head coach...blah, blah, blah... widely known that Chris Petersen coveted the Oregon spot... blah, blah, blah... Statue of Liberty play."

Ole Miss get mentioned only as the team that "lucked up and beat Florida in the Swamp," but if I were to base my knowledge of the Mississippi State football situation on "national media," I could easily assume that JWS was still coach.

Another, unscientific measure. If you go to News.Google.com and search "auburn coaching vacancy," you get 121 hits. If you search "mississippi-state coaching vacancy," you get 38.

Weren't you the one that posted Friday night that some LA sports talk personality said Petersen was still in play despite the statement?

MSU, but he added that "any place in the SEC is better than the WAC." I also stand by my earlier statement that (before Tubby "resigned") MSU was the second-best opening in the country. Currently, I would rather go to MSU than Auburn if I wanted a bit less stress. I don't think most coaches will see it that way, but State is clearly a better job than Syracuse, San Diego, and the Michigan/Ohio Directionals.

The point of the post was more that there has been little National pub on the opening. I don't think that one mention that was more about how bad the WAC is could be considered a "pro-MSU" statement.

Fair enough. It's just that your original post implied that Petersen and Mississippi State never came up out there.

And, for that matter, how little Auburn has been mentioned... other than by Tubby's mama. I'm hearing more about specific candidates than openings. I am officially on Turner Gill lockdown until somebody hires his ***.
