You think Torbush's son will come along to MSU?

From Rick Cleveland's column:

Torbush has spent the last three seasons at his alma mater, Carson-Newman, as assistant head coach. He and his wife, Janet, who earned her Ph.d from Ole Miss, have their dream house there on a lake just outside of Sevierville, Tenn. Their son, Trey, was a freshman long snapper and wide receiver on the Carson-Newman football team. Carson-Newman has been highly successful those three seasons. It was the place where the Torbushs planned to retire.

That said, I really don't think giving Duncan's kid a scholarship (if we really did offer him a scholarship and he's not just committing as a walk-on) is all that bad of a risk. He was 1st team All-State, and that includes all public and private school classifications. He's got good size and good genes. He might actually be able to contribute at some point in his career.

It just seems like people like to **** on legacies at MSU for some reason. Then they get pissed when they go to Bama and Ole Miss and beat us.

He didn't stand out period. God or bad.

Look, I am willing to bet that he never scores 5 TD's in his 4 years at Miss State. He may not (and probably won't) score any and if he does great. I will not only be shocked that we have a TE that is utilized but that an Academy player actually works out at the SEC level. Don't give me the WIll Prosser bull ****. The only this that guy is a star at is bar hopping. Nice guy, average to below average talent wise and overall a player that will be totally forgotten in a couple of years.

Lil' Duncan is going to be going from blocking little Billy and Johnny to big Greg Hardy, Michael Johnson, Ricky Jean Francios ect........

Whatever, pat Duncan on the back and give his boy a scholarship. WTF do I care? I am only paying for his education.

he has a much better chance of panning out at DE than he does at TE. Still I see him having little impact.

Huh?

Also, he's a good/smart kid. Comes from good stock. A bit of a whiner when he was younger, but I think he's grown out of that. I think he's a quality person to have on the team and I think he'll contribute at some point.....if nothing else, special teams and gpa.

..at least you have a somewhat informed opinion while you're running down a guy that hasn't even signed with us yet.

I've only seen him play 2 games. But in those 2, one against JA and one against Magnolia Heights, he was absolutely dominant at his position. Granted his team got blown out, but that was no fault of his own.

And while you're taking time out from running down a commitment to bash small-time football, are you familiar with anyone we signed from 1A Faulkner High School in recent memory?

and am pretty familiar with the talent level in single A ball. I'm not sure I see your point. Because Faulkner and Weir have good talent then it validates McKenzies scholarship?

Are you comparing the talent level? If that's the case I would say 1A football teams would be more than competitive with all but 3-4 academies. Maybe all but JA and JP.

I hope the kid works out for the sake of our team but all I am saying is that he probably won't. I was saying I don't think we should put Torbush's kid on scholarship.

which is a school that is comparable in size to Starkville Academy, but has a little better team, but they're no Prep or JA either, has beaten St. Andrew's, a pretty good 2A team two years in a row. Prep has beaten Pearl, a 4A school two years in a row and had a playoff team this year, I believe, and has gone 1-1 to Newton County, a pretty good 3A team.

I have seen Mississippi High School football from 5A all the way to Academy ball and any A in between. My take on it, and I'm a public school guy, and went to a public school, is that the Academy's aren't that bad, it's just that they play a different style of football. Most would compete in 1A just because of their size- in fact there's an 8 man Private School league here in Mississippi. That's probably what spurned the Faulkner HS comment. It's just like the difference between the SEC and the PAC-10. They're comparable in terms of talent, splitting hairs here, I know the SEC is better, but they play different styles of football. The public schools- which seems to be changing a lot the past five years with the rise of the spread offenses- seem to rely a lot more on athletic ability on both sides of the ball (See South Panola) whereas the private school teams seem to rely a lot more on playing fundamentally sound football and simply try to win by playing the game better and outhustling the other team (See Jackson Prep). I actually find both equally entertaining to watch.

Husband caught 5.

Of course, Butler's go like this from fr. to senior year: 4,3,1,0. That's a classic MSU pattern right there.

i think mckenzie will get an academic scholarship. i heard he has a high act score (may be 30+) so that should take care of most of this "scholarship problem"

In football and basketball, if a player is on ANY kind of scholarship he counts against the scholarship limits. He can pay his own way and not count, or get financial aid (although I'm guessing he wouldn't qualify for any) and not count, but if he gets any kind of a scholarship, he counts.
