Anything that you've done or been involved in that was scary and/or dangerous? Maybe something that you could have been in but just missed by a little time or distance?

When I was a student at State, my best friend and I were driving back to Starkville from Jackson late at night. Highway 25 was barely getting started on 4-laning, so I took the Natchez Trace to Highway 12 route. It was the night of January 1st or 2nd, and no one was on the roads. Somewhere in the middle of nowhere on Highway 12, I think south of Ackerman, a car came speeding up behind us with its bright lights on. Now, being a college kid I might have flipped him off, but didn't this time. He followed for a while and I slowed down to let him pass. While he was passing me the interior light came on in his car and I saw a kid driving and a guy in the passenger seat loading a shotgun. I didn't know what to do so I just hit the brakes. They pulled in front of me diagonally, blocking both lanes of the 2-lane road, and this old man jumped out and started yelling at me. I lowered the window and he pointed the shotgun right at my head. He was MAD, and his hands were shaking. He was yelling that I had driven through his yard and dug tire tracks in his grass. I hadn't, and tried to tell him that. I got out to show him I didn't have mud on my car, but then I saw I did have a little, and he got madder and shakier. After about 2-3 minutes of him yelling and me repeatedly telling him I didn't do it and that we were just coming back from Jackson, he grumbled and got back in his car and they sped off. I just got back in my car and drove back to Starkville.

I realized later just how close I came to getting shot in the head, especially with him shaking so much. Good thing I didn't flip him off when he was behind me, or he might have shot out my rear window.

Strange thing when I got back to Starkville that night. My friend lived in Wood Manor off Highway 12, and when we got to his place we decided to go the Omelet Shoppe. Right at Wood Manor this Starkville police car got right behind me and followed me all the way to the Omelet Shoppe, then drove by really really slowly when we pulled into the parking lot. Then a little bit later when we were still there he drove by again slowly. Didn't see him again after that, but that just added on to a weird night.

At night no less.

What was scary was not that they were just throwing things at you- but they were throwing glass beer bottles at us.

You can flip me off and moon me or whatever, but when you're getting stuff thrown at you like that, that's a whole nother ball of wax. You're instinct is to just get out of there because if you go off and try to defend yourself, then you could end up in the hospital if you're lucky.

I'm honestly shocked that no one has died there, that I'm aware of.

Second time I went to LSU wasn't as bad, maybe it was because it was during the day or because I was wearing a random minor league baseball team t-shirt, I don't know.

I was working for MDOT on the I-10/Hwy. 607 interchange in Hancock County, when a semi-truck t-boned my pickup. I broke 7 ribs, crushed my pelvis, punctured a lung, lost 7 pints of blood, and coded once. Nobody even noticed the broken bones in my hand until a week later, when my condition stabilized.

To make this sports related, Brett Favre was in a serious car wreck about a week before me. When I was laying on the couch and only getting up with the help of crutches, Favre was out there whipping Alabama 27-24. Whatever you say about him, Favre is one tough Sonuvagun.

Standing, talking to a neighbor in his yard after (we thought) a bad storm had passed. It was a calm, and then like turning on a light switch it got loud with a vaccum sound and we saw shingle granules flying off the house next to us - so we ran inside and hit. An F1 tornado had formed freakin 50 feet from where we were standing.

About 5 years later, the scary moment was the Jackson area tornado recently. I was a passenger in a car at an intersection when the action started. I made a snap flight-or-fight decision in favor of flight. I bailed on the driver & other passengers and sprinted into a restaurant across the street. Upon further review, I'm pretty sure I didn't check for traffic before running across the said street. Dang that was twice I could have gotten killed that day.

It was rusty and slippery and without question the dumbest +$@!!+@ thing I've ever done in my life.

But...

Glad I did it. Nothing quite like being 40 feet above the MS River with only a rusty see through floor made of steel to keep you alive.

1. driving back to starkville three years ago on new years night at about midnight. just about to pass the Winston County Jail north of Louisville. i had moved over to the left lane because of some deer on the side of the road. i moved back to the right lane and literally a split second after i got in the right lane a huge SUV topped the hill and passes me. problem was he was going south in the northbound lanes. i never saw him coming because of the hills. he had to be doing 80. he was close enough that his mirror hit the mirror on my truck and shattered it.

2. gun pulled on me after a JV football game. tried to run the son of a ***** over when i jumped in the truck and the cops had the nerve to yell at ME.

3. was working off shore in the gulf to pay for college and was on night shift. a rig about a quarter mile from us exploded. three were killed. it looked like an effing atom bomb mushroom cloud that was on fire. crazy stuff.

I was in University Hills and wound up running between 2 trailers to escape the tornado. Was going to duck behind the porch of the trailer on my right, but the wind blew me down on the ground closer to the trailer on my left. So I crawled until my upper body was under the trailer. Next thing I know the trailer I'm under picks up a few feet off the ground and comes back down with one of the I-beams its sitting on landing probably 6 inches from my head. That trailer on my right was destroyed and the porch I had intended to hide behind had moved a good 10 feet. Several people were actually in trailers that got destroyed and one guy was thrown down that front hill when his trailer was absolutely obliterated. 20 something stitches for him i think.

I can't believe that in a tornado you ran to a trailer for shelter

well I'd initially run out of a trailer thinking just that and trying to get to a truck but didn't make it that far.

2007 a couple weeks before Christmas my gf and I were getting out of my car in front of her house in the Garden District. A scrawny little crack head came out of the shadows with a semi-automatic 9mm and pointed it at my head asking me to empty my pockets and for her to hand over her purse. He grabbed everything, jumped in my car and sped off. On Christmas night, he used my car in a driveby with an AK-47 and killed 2 wounded 4. I was operating on one of the wounded a week later when I got a call from a homicide detective wanting to know where I had been on Christmas night. (He had no idea my car had been stolen). (Also, ironically, the detective's wife was an MD that I worked with). I got the last laugh though when the guy came in two weeks later with multiple gunshot wounds to his chest on a night I was on trauma call. I cracked his chest in the ER. Sad to say he didn't make it.

This guy is from my hometown. He gets VERY nervous any time severe weather comes in the area. An experience that will leave you scarred for life, I guess.

hunting Guntersville Lake, we had a floating blind that we had to paddle a small jon boat to get to from the bank. Dad stepped out of the blind into the jon boat, I was about 13, still watching for ducks, turned to see how far he was from the blind, and the jon boat was upside down. I never heard it flip over, I was kicking my boots off when his hand came up on the opposite side of the boat, then went back down. He came up and grabbed the blind, I helped him in the blind, got the boat turned back over and headed to the bank. Oh yeah, it was 17 degrees, had a mile run back to the landing in the big boat. All he was worried about was Mom finding out, she still doesn't know about it, 28 years later.

Watching the twin towers both fall from less than 8 blocks away and feeling the Earth shake. Also seeing people jump out. That was the most scared I will ever be.

I guess I was about 13 or 14 at the time. We were building a fence with 4x4 posts in the ground and we had 1x6 slats going across. The fence had a sort of spline shape to it so each slat was nailed to one post, set against the other post towards the other end, and pushed in the middle until the free end of the slat was against the post it was to be nailed to. Well, my dad was pushing and he had me stand and see when the slat was curved enough. He was doing a slat that was about 5'6" above ground and its free end slipped off the post. What was a curved slat rapidly wanted to become a straight slat again, and my head was preventing it from doing so, but not for long. I was knocked down and had an incredible headache. After a visit to an MEA and the ER, I was deemed to be well. Only a small bruise on my scalp and no internal injuries or memory damage (I was able to repeat the number sequences they read out for memory checks backwards). However, I realized that if the slat were lower or I were taller, the thing would have hit my neck and that could have been the end for me.

Amazing. In a bad way of course.

9/11 might be the most worried, not scared, I ever was. I was nowhere near the event. But I was trying to start a family and had serious worries about the country's future - suicide bombings becoming the norm here, terrorists with stinger missiles randomly taking down planes at airports, etc.

i was actually there for this event. i was sitting in the living room eating a late lunch with my girlfriend when the power went off. i get up to look out the window and see the funnel cloud coming toward us and debris flying everywhere. not knowing what to do, since im in a trailer, i take off running to the back and throw my mattress on top of both of us. after a short period, i get up and walk outside to a scene of total destruction. we were about 20 yards from the path and very lucky that we did not get injured. a gas line was busted and we were all forced to evacuate. we were running up the hill while the rescue workers were running down the hill and asking us if we were ok. all the while the "warning" sirens were going off continually. all i could think is that another one was on its way while we were standing there with no shelter. it was kind of like a scene out of a movie. crazy day for me. needless to say, i quickly moved out of that place in hopes of finding a better structure to live in. a tornado will <17> a trailer up!!!

that were transporting Alaska barriers from Tikrit to Baghdad in the middle of the night. Manning the gun, a bomb got our truck. I was facing the direction the that the bomb came from. I saw bright, then felt hot on my face, then woke up 10 minutes later. The turret was still spinning when I came to and the dismount in the back of the truck pulled me in. I was later med-evaced to a Baghdad hospital for brain injuries and vomiting blood. Later we were told that we should all be dead, but that we survived because Hadj planted the bomb too deep into the ground.
