I think it's ludicrous that we haven't issued #21 for 17 years.

Keffer McGee, while we all mourn his loss, wasn't the first person to ever wear #21, and he shouldn't be the last. I've also always thought it odd that people get up in arms about #21 being reissued, while at the same time #97 has been reissued numerous times since Rodney Stowers died in 1991.

And for the record, I hope #36 is reissued whenever someone wants to have it.

Those numbers aren't final resting places, they should be legacies that other young men have the opportunity to live up to, just like any other number on the roster.

This may not be popular....

But it should go to a player that represents hard work and character.... Much like #38 worn at Ole Miss... Would be great if Calhoun would wear it, he is from a small school much like Magee.

This is my problem with it. It should have meaning.

Not sure what my thoughts are on Keffer's #. I agree that it should have meaning and not just be quietly issued to a walk-on in what appears to be hopes that we "wouldn't notice". We've already been through this with Griffin a few years ago -- and I thought it was agreed to it wouldn't come out anytime soon?

But I do have a couple of questions...

I thought Harrison and Bohanna were done? Bohanna via concussion and Harrison via graduation? By my count, we've currently got 71-73 scholarship players for the spring if that roster is to be believed -- with 19-20 likely to get in this summer(1 greyshirt and 1 almost sure nonqualifier). Gonna have to see some real attrition and/or placements between now and August to make that 85 number...

I'd like to see 21, 97, and 36 get special patches like those at USM. They don't retire certain numbers, just stick a patch with names on them on jerseys with special meaning.

36 should be given to a senior or captain-esk OLB or DE. I'm sure his mother would appreciate a leader being awarded her son's jersey.

I agree. Publicly honor Keffer, Rodney and Nick by including them in the ring of honor. But don't retire numbers.

No issue with it whatsoever......

#21 has been issued to Brandon Davis, who appears to be a walkon defensive back. First time since Keffer McGee died anyone has worn 21. Thoughts?

I think KM's has been more than sufficiently honored. I think anytime an active player dies any kind of special treatment of his number should last about as long as the there are players on the roster that knew him which would be around 4 years. Then, you certainly still do things to remember the person, but the number goes back into the hopper. The only some exception to that might be if the player died as a result of doing something exceptionally heroic.

I never know what "language" we're in when I see the number 17 on this board...

Seventeen Years.

I wouldn't think much about it yet. This just means we have someone wearing the jersey during spring. Wasn't there a picture of Nick Griffin or someone wearing it during a recruiting weekend? Doesn't mean we're going to see it on the field this fall.

But I have no problem with someone wearing it.

Totally agree. Obviously having been in school when Keffer died I'm going to assign more weight to it than some, but just handing this out ad hoc is a missed opportunity to do something special.

Do you think he would want someone to wear it? Probably so. So get off your horse and go tell those kids to get off your lawn
