Greg McElroy shares a favorite memory from his time with Nick Saban

Greg McElroy has enough stories of Nick Saban from his time with the Alabama Crimson Tide to fill an entire book.
The former Alabama quarterback decided to share a couple as his former coach enters retirement. Kind words are coming out about Saban from all walks of life, and it’s evident McElroy valued his relationship with the legendary coach.
During an appearance on SportsCenter, McElroy took some time to reminisce, sharing his favorite story from his time with Saban.
“One one in particular that stands out, and we were playing against Duke in 2010, and I threw a really bad pick to the left side, I was really late, it was way inside. It was, if not the worst throw of my college career, there’s a lot to choose from, it was in the running, I can assure you of that. And I threw it and it was right on our sideline,” McElroy set the stage. “So as I went to try to make the tackle, Coach was right there waiting for me with his arms crossed like this. We were up like 35-3. I mean, it was like a complete beatdown. So I was, ‘I’ll try and do a heat check, right? Let’s just try.’ Before I even got up, I’m on the ground. I got those black dots all over my face from the field turf. And I just see shoes right there right in front of me. And I didn’t need to know whose shoes they were because they weren’t cleats. I can promise you that. And I know very much because he was kind of tapping his toe, what was coming. And he looked over at me, he kind of smiled, he ripped me a little bit for sure. But he finished the ripping by saying, ‘You realize I could have thrown the ball 10 times better than that and I’m three times your age?’ That’s what he said.

“To be fair, and he threw a pretty good ball and he would remind us of that constantly because he was over there throwing to the DBs during warmup. So, Coach is the best, man. I think he there was a big misconception about how he was early on in his career. Yes, he demands a lot of us for sure. But he always met you where you’re at and he found a way to kind of bring you out of your funk if you weren’t playing great and bring you back down to earth when you were playing above and beyond. And I think that’s why his teams were so insanely consistent.”
That’s another hilarious Saban story to add to the many that have come out about him over the years. Now that the Alabama legend has entered retirement, hopefully we’ll hear more and more about what made his team’s tick.
Nick Saban deserves all the praise in the world as he enters retirement. The coach made an undeniable impact on the college football world as a whole, and that won’t change.
