Alabama offensive lineman Kadyn Proctor has become a weapon in the Crimson Tide run-game in short yardage situations. This season, Proctor has totaled four carries for 15 yards, including an 11-yard rush in Alabama‘s 24-21 win over No. 5 Georgia on Sept. 27.

During an appearance on Wednesday night’s edition of ‘Hey Coach & The Kalen DeBoer Show‘, DeBoer and Proctor explained the origin of the play. Proctor also broke down his preparation for earning the role out of camp.

“He just started in the backfield and he was in there in some packages during camp and some prep work before camp,” DeBoer said. “Lead blocking and stuff like that. But I’m guessing that there was a lot of behind the scenes work happening to do more than just block. All of a sudden there ended up being a couple of plays that were kind of ‘fun’ at the time, but it kinda became a serious thing because you could see that it could go well and impact our team.”

Proctor’s first touch of the season came on a backwards pass from quarterback Ty Simpson. Proctor caught the ball at the Georgia 13-yard line and rumbled for an 11-yard gain down to the 2-yard line. Simpson found paydirt for the score one play later, giving the Tide a 10-point lead at the break.

“It really comes back to the preparation,” Proctor said. “For me to be able to get these opportunities, it’s so crazy because I’m one of one out here running the ball, blocking, and catching the ball. I’m doing things that others haven’t, so I’m really just blessed to be in this position. But I feel like I take it really serious and that’s why I keep getting opportunities.”

“Coach has to keep having trust in me. Like ball security, I’ll watch ball security drills or coach (Ryan) Grubb tells me to watch the run drills and I’ll go watch that because it’s something I need to know. Because I know, God forbid I drop that ball one time, it’s over with. It’s over. So you get that one opportunity, you gotta seize it.”

Proctor has totaled just four total yards on his other three carries, but in short-yardage situations, all you need is a yard sometimes. He certainly has been a much needed boost at times, as Alabama‘s run-game has been disappointing this season.
