Kalen DeBoer couldn’t be more enthusiastic about the progress of his starting quarterback. Appearing on Bussin’ With The Boys, the Alabama head coach spoke at length about Ty Simpson’s development and the confidence he’s shown through the first half of the season.

“I think every week there’s been a lot of growth and learning from him. He’s really taken everything on. Our coaches continue to coach him hard, and he’s great with it now because he understands that we’re doing it out of trust. We’re asking a lot of him, and he’s capable of it — and he knows we believe that,” DeBoer stated.

“Even this last week, we put a lot on his shoulders. We know there were times he could’ve done a better job getting rid of the ball, and you can call that being picky, but we need great play out of him. We need him to manage the game, but also bring the explosives — whether it’s with his feet or his arm. Those big plays that separate him from other quarterbacks are going to happen because of who he is and what we do offensively.

“He just has to keep learning from the moments that set us back as an offense, and he’s done that every week. Now there are new things that’ll present themselves heading into Missouri.”

Simpson’s performance this season has lived up to his coach’s praise. In Alabama’s 30-14 win over Vanderbilt on Saturday, the star quarterback completed 23 of his 31 pass attempts for 340 yards and two touchdowns, with just one interception. Through five games, he’s thrown for 1,478 yards and 13 touchdowns while completing an impressive 70.3 percent of his passes.

Even more impressive is Simpson’s poise. He’s made plays with both his arm and his legs, showcasing the dual-threat ability that DeBoer referenced. His consistency and command of the offense have been key reasons the Crimson Tide continue to climb back into the national spotlight after an early-season stumble against Florida State.

Additionally, Simpson’s play has also caught the attention of oddsmakers. According to BetMGM, he currently holds +800 odds to win the Heisman Trophy, tied for the third-best mark in the nation alongside Ohio State wide receiver Jeremiah Smith. The two trail only Miami quarterback Carson Beck and Oregon’s Dante Moore.

This weekend, Simpson will have another opportunity to build his case when No. 8 Alabama travels to face No. 14 Missouri. Kickoff is set for Noon ET on ABC — another national stage for the rising star to show just how far he’s come under DeBoer’s tutelage.
