Keon Sabb injury update: Kane Wommack reveals where Alabama DB stands in recovery

One of the major injuries that hampered Alabama last season was Keon Sabb. In his first season with the program after transferring in from Michigan, Sabb was impressing back at the safety position. But after the Tennessee game, he had to be shut down for the rest of the year.
How Sabb recovers throughout preseason camp is a massive storyline for the Crimson Tide. Good news is, he projects to be on a good path. Defensive coordinator Kane Wommack gave the latest on Saturday after getting another practice in the books.
“Keon is doing a really good job,” Wommack said. “He has really pushed. Our training camp has done a great job with him. I think he’s ahead of every marker that we had in the offseason for him. We weren’t sure if he was going to be able to go to the level right now at the beginning of fall camp. But he is and he’s here. I don’t know if I can put a number on it, exactly, but he’s out there playing with our guys. So, he’s comfortable enough to be able to do that.”
Sabb sat out all of spring practice, watching his teammates work from the sideline. His last real football-related activity came on Oct. 19 inside Neyland Stadium. A long road to recovery is hopefully coming to an end and Alabama will get Sabb back on a full-time basis.
Still, the process of preparing your body for football can be a long one after an injury. Wommack believes the buildup is still taking place for Sabb ahead of Alabama’s season opener on Aug. 30.

“Sometimes, those injuries, you’ve got to build a callus of coming back,” Wommack said. “I think that’s something he’s really pushing himself, right now, to get ready for the season.”
In seven games last season, Sabb made 39 tackles, one tackle for a loss, and recorded two interceptions. However, they both came in the season opener against Western Kentucky. In a unit looking to consistently force turnovers, one of the goals moving forward might be to get a few during SEC play.
For now, focus is on making sure the health gets back to 100%. Alabama will not have a path to easing into the schedule, immediately facing off against Florida State on the road. Sabb is going to be a big part of the equation one back on the field.
