Kirk Herbstreit, Joey Galloway blast idea that Alabama could fire Kalen DeBoer
Whether experts or fans, a lot of people seem to still think that, one way or another, Kalen DeBoer will be anywhere next season but at Alabama. Neither Kirk Herbstreit or Joey Galloway could believe or understand why that’d be the case, though, as he finishes year two in Tuscaloosa.
During the Q&A portion of ‘Nonstop’ on Monday, Herbstreit and Galloway received one asking if DeBoer would be fired if Alabama loses to Oklahoma on Friday night in the CFP. Herbstreit couldn’t believe it was a legitimate question, while Galloway got it just because someone somewhere is always getting fired by somebody.
“Will Alabama fire Kalen DeBoer if they if they lose to Oklahoma? Is that a serious question?” Herbstreit asked. “What game is he playing in this weekend? Is he, that’s a playoff game?”
“Kalen DeBoer, since being at Alabama? I mean, from day one, it has been this stuff,” noted Galloway. “It doesn’t matter nowadays (to be in the playoff), dude. It does not matter where you’re playing, what you’ve done. People want to fire people. They just want someone to get fired.”
To this point, DeBoer is 19-7 (.731) so far as head coach of the Tide, including 10-3 this season in returning ‘Bama, after having them right in contention for each last year, back both to the SEC Championship and to the College Football Playoff. He, nonetheless however, is currently being rumored to somehow not be back next year. That’s either way, whether another job hires him, with reports connecting him to the open jobs at Penn State or at Michigan, or like this question where he’s supposedly fired, despite those successes and despite what’d be an all-time kind of price tag for a buyout, by Alabama.
Still, Herbstreit and Galloway agreed that this likely isn’t the belief of the entire fanbase. Thoughts like this come from that small section of it that are displeased regardless, especially when only comparing him to the historic standard of the last coach before him

“Because we’re all looking for likes and clicks, the best way to do that is to say something negative. Like, you know what I mean? That is the best way to do it to get (that). I mean, you told me this a long time ago. That fringe fan? Like, those ones are the loudest,” Galloway said. “And, it was crazy because I didn’t realize when you told me. Like, those people on Twitter, the crazies are fringe people. And so, for years, I had heard, because Alabama used to come at me like I hated them, like I hated Alabama at one point in my life – until I went to Alabama, and met the people in Tuscaloosa. They were amazing…Nicest people in the world in the restaurants, and everyone in there is, like, welcome. And I was like, that’s amazing. Everything I’d received on Twitter, you’d have thought that I had to sneak into town and sneak out of town, but they were amazing.”
“I think every fanbase has that five or ten percent that their own fanbase is embarrassed of. And, unfortunately, you hear from them the most,” said Herbstreit. “And, you can’t allow that to make you think, well, Alabama fans (are idiots).”
While it’s still not necessarily for certain yet that he won’t take another job, no, Alabama won’t be firing DeBoer after at least a 10-win season, an appearance in the SEC Championship, and a berth in the College Football Playoff. That’s with reporting now out that he’s actually in talks to even get a possible extension with the Tide. So, because of all that, Herbstreit hopes everyone turns their attention now to what’s actually in front of them, which is a road playoff game at OU on Friday.
“But, no. He’s not going to get fired,” Herbstreit stated. “You know, how about this guy, this Kalen DeBoer? Is he going to get fired? And then other people are like, he’s going to Michigan! It’s like, woah, geez. How about just, let’s get excited about a playoff game on Friday night? You’re playing in Norman this week. Let’s enjoy it, alright.”
