One of the staples of the Nick Saban era at Alabama has been his wife, Miss Terry. She’s around the program to support her husband, cheer for the Crimson Tide and, apparently, help with recruiting.

During “Hey Coach and The Nick Saban Show” on Thursday, Saban opened up about the impact Miss Terry has on the Crimson Tide. She was in attendance, sitting directly in front of the stage when Saban took the question from media guest Ryan Hennessy.

Saban pointed to two things Miss Terry does well: Recruiting and supporting him during the jam-packed schedule during football season.

“Well, I think more than you know. More than anybody knows,” Saban said of how much Miss Terry means to the program. “And I’m not going to look at her while I say this, but first of all, she’s one of the best recruiters. The players love her, the parents love her … she’s got great people skills. Everybody feels at home. It sort of gives everybody the feeling of family, which is what you’re always trying to create. You need a village of people to support these guys, whether it’s personally, academically, athletically. To have good wives in the organization, and Miss Terry’s great.

“The second thing is to support me because football season is tough. It’s not family friendly. I’m not home very much, we don’t get to talk very much, we don’t get to do anything really together. She has opportunities to to do things that she chooses not to do because she worries about me, aight? And I think that’s pretty special and I appreciate it more than you know. I don’t get to tell her that very often, but I’m telling her now.”

Then, Saban told a story about when he got hired at Alabama. He was the coach of the Miami Dolphins, and on his way home from exit meetings with the players, he called Miss Terry to ask her to call athletic director Mal Moore not to come over to the house for an interview. He wanted to stay at Miami.

There was one problem. Saban was too late. Moore was already there.

“You have your final meeting with the players, players go through exit physicals. I’m talking about when I’m at the Miami Dolphins. So I talk to the team and I just said, ‘I’m staying here, no problem,'” Saban recalled. “I’m driving home and I call Miss Terry and I say, because I know Mal was supposed to come over that night, and I said, ‘I want you to call Mal and tell him I’m not interested in talking to him and ask him not to come over.’

“She said, ‘He’s already here.’ So I had no choice.”
