Tight end Cameron Latu has monster game for Tide against Miami

Wade-Peeryby: Wade Peery09/05/21

Alabama tight end Cameron Latu announced himself to the college football world on Saturday, during Alabama’s 44-13 throttling of Miami.

While Alabama fans had been hearing rave reviews of Latu for the entire 2021 off-season, the rest of the college football world hadn’t gotten to see the converted tight end in action.

The former defensive end had at least one touchdown in four of the team’s five offseason scrimmages.

After tonight’s three catch, two touchdown performance against Miami, it’s safe to say the rest of the college football world has been introduced to the breakout star. Check out the video below tweeted by On3’s Matt Zenitz.

As On3’s Matt Zenitz tweeted above, he had two touchdowns alone in the first half against Miami. For the entire game, Latu hauled in three catches for 43 yards, with two of those catches going for touchdowns.

Latu’s breakout performance even caught the attention of his former teammate, Pittsburgh Steelers running back Najee Harris.

Latu dominated in spring ball

Latu had a big-time peformance in Alabama’s spring game and you can hear ESPN’s Joe Tessitore yell, “This is the guy everybody’s buzzing about!” after he scored a touchdown.

Here’s a video clip from the Alabama 2021 spring game.

Cameron Latu Prospect Profile

Latu actually was one of the top defensive end prospects in the country coming out of high school. He played for Olympus (Salt Lake City, Utah). He was rated as a unanimous four-star prospect by every major recruiting outlet. As a senior, he racked up 43 tackles, 11 tackles for loss, and six sacks for the Olympus Titans. The gifted athlete also attended Nike’s “The Opening” camp for some of the nation’s top high school football prospects.

The decision to move Latu to tight end was at one point described as “experimental” by Alabama head coach Nick Saban. It’s safe to say that experiment has paid off in a big way and the Alabama staff is being rewarded for their patience.

It’s exciting and fascinating to watch a prospect like Latu blossom the way he has by switching positions.

Jameson Williams

There were several Tide offensive players that had big days, and former Ohio State Buckeye Jameson Williams was one of them. He showcased his world-class speed as he took a 94-yard bomb from Bryce Young to the house.

As Zenitz noted above, Bryce Young became the first quarterback in Alabama history with four touchdown passes in his first career start. Young was one of the most highly touted prospects ever to come out of storied Mater Dei (Pasadena, California) for a reason.

He’s a special quarterback prospect with a unique feel for pressure in the pocket. Young also does a wonderful job of continuing to fixate his eyes down the field, even while being pressured. The California native has always had surgically accurate ball placement with his passes, dating back to his high school days.

Tonight, he completed over 71 percent of his passes for 344 passing yards, while tossing four touchdown passes and throwing no interceptions. It was a sparkling debut for the Mater Dei product.

Bryce Young, Cameron Latu, and the rest of the Crimson Tide are back in action on Sept. 11 against the Mercer Bears. Kickoff is slated for 4:00 PM EST on the SEC Network.
