For the last two years, Jalen Milroe presented a two-way threat to opposing defenses. He threw an impressive deep ball, but his ability as a runner also made the Alabama offense dangerous.

Now, Milroe is off to the NFL with the Seattle Seahawks, and Ty Simpson is the frontrunner to take over as the Crimson Tide’s starting quarterback. With new offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb also in the fold, Alabama is sure to take on a new look on offense this season.

While Simpson pointed out the differences in his game compared to Milroe’s, he also knows his athletic ability can make an impact. He’ll also rely on a staunch offensive line and do what it takes to win games in Grubb’s scheme.

“Coach Grubb coming in, he’s going to put his stuff in from being from the NFL,” Simpson said at the Manning Passing Academy in Thibodaux, La. “But I also think that me and Jalen have different playing abilities, I guess. Jalen, his legs were very unique. Everybody else saw that. That guy is [as] freakish [an] athlete I’ve ever seen. I feel like I’m a good athlete, as well, but Jalen does things better than I did. But I also do things, some, better than Jalen. It just depends on what the game is that week and what they do.

“We’re going to be true to our identity and get our playmakers the ball, but also understand that we’ve got a good offensive line up front. I’m very, very excited about what’s to hold in the future.”

Milroe was a dynamic playmaker with his legs, rushing for 1,257 yards and 32 touchdowns during his two years as Alabama’s starting quarterback. Simpson also got some run last season, throwing for 381 passing yards while adding 130 rushing yards and three touchdowns on the ground.

Ty Simpson preaches consistency at Alabama in 2025

This year, Ty Simpson is in the midst of a quarterback competition, battling against Austin Mack and freshman Keelon Russell. Grubb recently reiterated the former five-star recruit is in the driver’s seat, but the battle will continue into training camp.

Regardless, Simpson said the biggest key for Alabama in 2025 will be consistency. If the Crimson Tide can hone in the small details, they’ll be in position to reach the high bar they set.

“We’ve just got to make sure that we can be consistent, that we do the little things the right way and we prepare the right way,” Simpson said. “Coach always says, winners win because that’s what winners do, and winners win by doing the little things right and being professionals.

“Going in each day and making sure that you do everything consistently – whether that’s getting workouts in, treatment, film study – that’s going to help us win on Saturdays. That’s what I think our biggest message is right now is just be consistent and do everything the right way.”
