The Arkansas Razorbacks are getting ready for a massive series against the Texas Longhorns. Unfortunately, head coach Dave Van Horn isn’t confident that outfielder Logan Maxwell is going to be able to play this weekend.

In an injury update ahead of the series, Van Horn revealed the grim outlook for Maxwell. There’s still a chance he goes, but will likely be limited if that does happen at all.

“He’ll be available, but he’s not doing much right now,” Van Horn said. “So, that’s where we are with him. He might be able to play during the series sometime. Might be able to just hit, pinch-hit. I don’t know about playing in the outfield yet. But, yeah, he’s down.”

Maxwell was forced to leave last Friday’s game against Florida in the fourth inning with an apparent hamstring injury. It’s been an issue for him throughout the season and now it’s costing him time at an important turning point in the season for the Razorbacks.

A transfer from TCU, where he played three seasons, Maxwell brought plenty of experience with him once he came to Arkansas. He’s also swung an excellent bat. This season, he’s got a .342 batting average with a 1.056 OPS to go along with nine home runs and 24 RBIs. Defensively, he hasn’t made an error since his freshman season.

Outfield depth is going to get tested in a big way for Van Horn and the Razorbacks now. Along with Maxwell, freshman Gabe Fraser has been having some issues. Already the replacement for Nolan Souza, Arkansas is going to either need players to play through those issues or find the depth to compete.

This comes at a point in the season where Arkansas has run into some adversity. The Razorbacks have now lost three SEC series in a row, winning just one game in each of those series. With that, Arkansas has fallen to 37-9 overall and 14-7 in SEC play. That’s left Arkansas in a tie for second place in the SEC standings with LSU. They’re both chasing Texas.

Arkansas has three SEC series left this season. The next two are going to be against Texas and LSU, which should go a long way in determining the regular season standings.

The series against Texas is scheduled for three games beginning on Thursday in Fayetteville. That first game is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. CT. and 7:00 p.m. ET. Fans not at the ballpark can watch that opener on ESPN2.
