The chaos from the Auburn Tigers offseason has taken another turn. After battling back and forth earlier in the year on whether or not to fire head football coach Bryan Harsin, the Tigers are losing another key piece to their program in athletic director Allen Greene. Greene announced that he was stepping away from the program recently. And on Wednesday, the now former Auburn AD released this statement thanking the University and officially announcing his resignation.

“Since January 2018, you have welcomed Christy and me and our children into your family,” said Greene. “Together, we have celebrated tremendous victories, made lifelong friends, and created memories that will last a lifetime. As our time at Auburn Athletics comes to an end, I want to express my appreciation and gratitude.

“To the Auburn student-athletes who compete valiantly and represent this wonderful institution with class, thank you.”

Greene notified University President Dr. Christopher Roberts this week of his decision to step away from his role leading the Tigers in order to pursue other professional interests. He took over at Auburn in 2018 after spending the last six seasons in Buffalo. From 2012 to 2015, he was the Bulls’ Deputy AD and assumed the role of athletic director in 2015.

Auburn Live wrote about Green’s immediate future in April. Things always appeared to be headed in this direction.

In a perfect world, Greene would have liked to remain at Auburn. He sought clarity for months on his situation. When that clarity didn’t come and it became obvious Roberts wasn’t going to renew his contract, Greene made his intentions known.

This isn’t surprising given Greene interviewed at numerous other universities over the last year for AD positions. Greene saw the writing on the wall, and the plan was always for Greene and Auburn to part amicably.

More from Auburn’s official release

“Allen arrived on The Plains with vision, passion and experience to elevate Auburn Athletics to the next level,” Roberts said. “In the brief time that I have worked alongside Allen as President, he has proven to be an asset to Auburn, enhancing our athletics programs and facilities, and has been dedicated to our student-athletes, to integrity and to our University. We’re grateful for his commitment and contributions to Auburn over the past four and a half years and we wish Allen, Christy and their children all the best as they embark on a new chapter in their lives.”
