Auburn WR commits Perry Thompson, Bryce Cain dominate in-state battle

The state of Alabama was treated to yet another marvelous game on Friday night, as Mobile Baker outlasted Foley in a 51-41 barnburner. Defense appeared to be optional, which was good news to the offenses and a pair of Auburn wide receiver commitments that proceeded to shine.
It was the Perry Thompson and Bryce Cain show, as both wideouts dazzled with elite performances against one-another. Cain hauled in three touchdowns, propelling Baker to victory, while Thompson managed over 100 total yards and a score.
Thompson is the No. 30 overall prospect, No. 8 WR and No. 3 player in Alabama in the 2024 cycle, according to the On3 Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies. Cain checks in as the No. 331 prospect, No. 56 WR and No. 17 player in Alabama.

Thompson headlines Auburn’s 2024 recruiting class
Auburn Live’s Cole Pinkston was in attendance for the eye-popping game, which in-turn led to glowing reviews about the pair of receivers that are set to head to the Plains next season. Auburn’s 2024 recruiting class currently ranks No. 12 in the nation, per the On3 Industry Team Recruiting Ranking.
“I find myself looking for something to criticize him on, and I come up empty most of the time. Thompson is a football player, which is not always the case for elite athletes. He understands the game and how to play correctly,” Pinkston said of Thompson.
Thompson flipped to Auburn from Alabama in July after being committed to the Crimson Tide for over a year. He now headlines the Tigers’ class alongside Cain and a crew of in-state products, including Clanton (Ala.) Chilton County five-star linebacker Demarcus Riddick.

“I can go build that legacy at Auburn,” Thompson told On3. “I can be someone that helps turn things around and be the guy for the program. It is just the place I feel is the best first for me.”
Cain bringing “elite” speed to the Plains
“His first couple of steps are elite, his long-speed is elite. It would be difficult to find someone with more quickness and speed than Cain,” Pinkston wrote. “Cain showed great poise, twitch, and knowledge of his corner routes and different inside routes. He was a problem for Foley and will be on the next level.”
Cain pledged to the Tigers on June 13. While he may not be as highly ranked as some of the other Auburn pledges, there’s real belief that the 5-foot-11, 170-pound four-star will be able to make an impact for Hugh Freeze and Co. at the next level.
“It just feels like home,” Cain said of Auburn. “Auburn feels like the best place for me. It’s just great. The coaches, the players and just the feel … I just love it.”
