Auburn wide receiver Perry Thompson plans to enter the NCAA transfer portal, On3’s Hayes Fawcett reported. He will have two years of eligibility remaining.

Thompson appeared in 22 games over his two years on The Plains, including all 12 this year. He hauled in 17 receptions for 154 yards as a sophomore, one year after totaling five catches for 126 yards and a touchdown as a true freshman.

Thompson played high school football at Foley (Ala.), where he was a four-star prospect. He was the No. 48 overall player from the 2024 cycle, according to the Rivals Industry Ranking.

Auburn went 5-7 this past season, just missing out on a bowl game. The Tigers also underwent a coaching change, parting ways with Hugh Freeze following a 10-3 loss to Kentucky at Jordan-Hare Stadium and made DJ Durkin the interim head coach. Durkin was under consideration for the full-time job, On3’s team of insiders previously reported, before the program hired Alex Golesh to the role.

Golesh spent the last three years as the head coach at USF and had the Bulls in the College Football Playoff conversation this year. They went 9-3 overall and 6-2 in American Conference play, just missing out on the league championship game. All told, he had a 23-15 overall record with the program.

A former Tennessee offensive coordinator, Golesh said he was still wrapping his head around the fanfare of his arrival at Auburn. He also said it’s a place he can see a national championship in the cards.

“The opportunity to come into a place like Auburn and specifically to get here on The Plains,” Golesh said. “I mean, this is one of the premier jobs in the entire country. For me, I’ve dreamed of an opportunity like this. When this opportunity came about, you sprint with this.

“It’s life changing, not in the sense that the level that it’s at or what it really is. It’s life changing because this is one of the very few places in the country that you can come and win a national title at. So, you run to it and it’s surreal in every way. But I’ve said it to the guys I’m really, really close with. I’m like, ‘Man, I feel like I’m in a movie.’”
