Hugh Freeze has elected to delay treatment for his prostate cancer diagnosis until after Auburn‘s 2025 college football season. Freeze has previously cited that doctors believe that the cancer is “treatable and curable.”

That means Freeze will be battling the cancer all season long, including fall camp which begins this week. He gave an update on his health on Wednesday less than a month before Auburn kicks off the regular season.

“I feel as good for this camp as I probably have in years,” Freeze said. “I don’t think anything about the health right now — whether that’s right, wrong or indifferent. I talk to docs — I had three of them text me yesterday. They’re awesome. I’ve got a great team around me, but I just don’t have any — I mean, I don’t feel sick.”

ESPN’s Chris Low reported in April that Freeze had the option to have surgery to have the cancer removed in June, which was the month before Auburn’s season starts, or in January after the season. It appears they have gone with the latter option.

Low spoke to his doctors at UAB and said that it’s a “slow-aggressive form” of cancer, and that his team of doctors are willing to wait instead of having the surgery immediately. In the interim, it is expected to be “very treatable and curable.” A man of faith, Freeze has said in the past that he will leave the rest up to prayer. His wife, Jill Freeze, is also taking care of the Auburn head coach.

“My wife’s got me taking all kinds of natural things that supposedly may cure prostate cancer,” Freeze continued. “We hope it does. We’ll recheck it in January and see where things are. But other than an old back, I feel great. Sometimes it gets a little tight. But I had that deal at Liberty where I had the infection get in, and I’m always going to have some arthritis there.

“But my energy is good. I feel great and excited about camp.”

This is great news for the Tigers head coach, who will be 56 years old in September. He feels good, and he’ll hope his team plays the same this fall.

Auburn will begin its 2025 college football season against Baylor on the road. The game is slated for a special Friday night kickoff on Aug. 29. The Tigers’ schedule will also feature the likes of Oklahoma, Texas A&M and Georgia in consecutive matchups. Not to mention the Iron Bowl against Alabama during the regular season finale.
