The Auburn Tigers are going into the 2025 season looking for a new standout at the running back position. That’s a role that head coach Hugh Freeze believes could end up being taken by Jeremiah Cobb.

Ahead of the upcoming SEC Media Days, Freeze shared some insight into his Tigers team. There, he boldly predicted that Jeremiah Cobb is going to breakout going into the 2025 season.

“I’m excited,” Hugh Freeze said. “I think Jeremiah Cobb is gonna have a breakout year. I think he’s super talented. Great long speed. I just don’t think he’s had enough touches to show what he can really do.”

Jeremiah Cobb is going into his third season with Auburn after coming to the school as a four-star recruit for the Class of 2023. In his previous two seasons, he’s carried the ball 62 times for 314 yards, or 5.1 yards per carry. He also has two career rushing touchdowns. In the passing game, he also has 13 career receptions for 92 yards another two touchdowns.

Of course, Hugh Freeze and Auburn aren’t entirely reliant on Jeremiah Cobb going into next season. The Tigers are going to have several other running backs to fill out the backfield. That starts with Damari Alston and Durell Robinson.

“Obviously, Alston is a solid back in every manner. He can do it all, and Durell, didn’t get to see him in the spring. Love what I see from him right now in summer workouts. He’s got the body type and it looks the right way. He’s got some good tape from UConn. So, I do think it will be those three mainly. Obviously, Alvin [Henderson] has a bright, bright future and he might surprise us early on, and Omar [Mabson],” Freeze said.

“I think that room is solid. I don’t know that people would look at it and say it’s elite, but I don’t think there’s any way that would be a reason we don’t win football games. I think they are very capable and great teammates too. Damari is one of the greatest leaders we have.”

Last season, Auburn was 62nd in rushing offense nationally, averaging 165.5 yards per game on the ground. That was good for seventh in the SEC. However, if Jeremiah Cobb is able to breakout the way that Hugh Freeze expects him to, then the Tigers could take a major leap forward as a team.

Cobb and Auburn open the season on the road against Baylor. They’ll later return home on September 6th for the home opener against Ball State.
