During Bryan Harsin’s introductory press conference at Auburn on Christmas Eve 2020, Allen Greene said they had their first conversation in a hot tub. Less than two years later, both Greene and Harsin are out of the picture, and John Cohen is now in as the new athletic director.

That brought about an important question during Cohen’s introductory press conference.

“[Have I] shared a hot tub with a football coach?” Cohen asked. “That’s a new one for me.”

Even though he didn’t seem to know why the question was asked, he provided an honest answer.

“Not to my knowledge,” he said.

By leaving Mississippi State for the Auburn job, Cohen jumped into an athletic department with plenty of pressure. He’s not worried about that, though, because he thinks the department has a high ceiling. That’s part of his vision.

“I’m not a big pressure guy,” Cohen said. “I just see opportunity. And I think Auburn is the land of opportunity. I think we have a great opportunity here, and I think the future’s really bright.”

John Cohen discusses the process, timeline of hiring Auburn’s next head football coach

At his introductory press conference on Tuesday, new Auburn athletic director John Cohen discussed the question at the forefront of every Tiger fan’s mind. What’s the plan for hiring the next head football coach?

“I thought someone might ask that question,” Cohen said. “This is a very, very long process. In fact, I have 58 things on this piece of paper that we go through as we go through this process. It starts with culture, it starts with Xs and Os, and it starts with recruiting.

“Those three things have to be upfront but there’s a whole lot of other things that have to be answered before you get really deep into it.”
