Auburn’s Johni Broome exited the Tigers’ game in the Elite Eight with around ten minutes to go with what looked like multiple injuries on one play. Now, the latest is known on his status after going to the locker room.

CBS’ Tracy Wolfson shared the latest she had on Broome from the sidelines in Atlanta coming out of the eight-minute media timeout. It did not initially sound good based on her view of his reaction to his coaches, teammates, and family as he headed to the back.

“As you mentioned, Johni Broome dealing with those two injuries. He’s in the locker room right now,” said Wolfson. “Bruce Pearl asked Johni as he was walking off the court if he was okay and he looked at him and said no. He told his teammates to finish the game. His parents were very emotional as they entered the locker room. That’s where they are right now.”

“We were told they are still evaluating it,” continued Wolfson. “The biggest concern is the elbow injury but we were told there is a slight chance he can still return.”

However, with just over five minutes left, Broome emerged, returned to the sideline, and checked back into the game immediately. With that came another report from Wolfson on the results of the testing that they did on him.

“Obviously, there was a lot of fear as he walked into that locker room but I was told he went in for x-rays, those x-rays were negative and, as you see, he’s giving it a go,” said Wolfson.

Broome came down on a play where it looked like several things happened to him. He twisted his left ankle while also appearing to hyperextend his right elbow. He remained on the court for a minute or two holding that elbow before walking off, speaking momentarily with his team and family, and heading into the locker room.

Still, as the Tigers maintained their lead, Broome returned and immediately impacted the game. After missing five minutes of game time, Broome came back in, got a defensive rebound, and then made a three-pointer to push their lead back to a dozen.

With that, Auburn would go on to win at 70-64 over No. 2 Michigan State to advance to the Final Four. Broome would lead the Tigers again in the victory with another double-double outing of 25 points (76.9% FG, 2-2 3PT), 14 rebounds, two assists, and a block and steal apiece.

This will be worth monitoring over the next week ahead of the national semifinals in San Antonio. For now, though, the focus is on the win, especially since Broome was able to return at all against the Spartans.

Broome gives status for Final Four during postgame interview

Johni Broome suffered an injury halfway through the second half of their game in the Elite Eight against Michigan State. He landed awkwardly after going for a loose ball, bending his elbow in a funny direction before leaving the game briefly and undergoing x-rays, which came back negative.

After his return, Auburn would go on to win the game, advancing to a Final Four matchup against No. 1 Florida. With that, CBS’ Tracy Wolfson asked Broome directly after the game whether he would be able to play in that national semifinal.

“I will be, but all glory to God,” Johni Broome said simply.
