'Pissed off' Hugh Freeze itching to get back to coaching: 'I know that everywhere I've been, we've won'
Hugh Freeze concluded his tenure with Auburn compiling a 15-19 overall record and a 6-16 mark in conference play. He was fired after beginning the 2025 season 4-5 after a 3-0 start to the year.
During a sit-down interview with Freeze, Auburn Sports’ Justin Hokanson questioned what’s next for Freeze after leaving Auburn. If anything, he has a sour taste in his mouth after the way his tenure ended.
“I’m pissed off, and I know that everywhere I’ve been, we’ve won,” Freeze told Hokanson. “Every single place, whether it’s high school or Lambuth, Arkansas State, Liberty, Ole Miss. (I’m) anxious, itching to do it again at the same time.”
Freeze appears content with whatever life throws at him next. That could be coaching a new college football program, or enjoying time spent at home with his loved ones.
“I’m enjoying being a grandpa, a husband, a father, a brother, closer to my parents and getting to do all those things that I probably have neglected somewhat,” Freeze continued. “It’s not like I’m going to rush it, but if the right thing comes along, I certainly would jump back in.

“And it wouldn’t bother me a whole lot to maybe take a year and get in the best shape of my life that I’ve been in in a while, because I had to quit working out in January with this with this back (injury), but I’m not through coaching. I don’t believe that for one minute. I know we do it the right way and for the right reasons, and I know that we can win. So (I) can’t wait to get that next opportunity.”
If Freeze does take a year off, it wouldn’t be the first time he’s taken some time away from coaching. After his resignation from Ole Miss in 2016 following a scandal, Freeze did not coach during the 2017 and 2018 seasons.
He was later hired at Liberty, where he was the head coach from 2019-2022. Freeze went 34-15 with the Flames and won at least eight games in all four years he led the program.
Auburn was hoping this success would follow Freeze to The Plains, but that wasn’t the case. Freeze never won more than six games in a single season across the better part of three seasons. He finished 15-19 overall record and a 6-16 mark in conference play
