According to Kendall Rogers of D1 Baseball, the Auburn Tigers and head coach Butch Thompson have agreed to a six-year contract extension. Thompson is set to make a base salary of $1.5 million with the chance to earn some incentives. The Auburn coaching staff around Thompson will also be receiving a nice pay raise.

“NEWS: @AuburnBaseball has given head coach Butch Thompson a new, more lucrative, contract,” Rogers said via X. “Details: – 6-year deal through 2031 – $1.5M base salary w/ fruitful incentives – increased staff salaries – Contract has incentives that rollover to 2033.”

Thompson took over on the Plains back in 2016 and has turned Auburn into a consistent threat inside the SEC. All but three seasons have resulted in the Tigers making the NCAA Tournament, one of which was his first campaign. Two College World Series appearances are on the resume.

Auburn was one of the best teams in college basketball this past year. A 41-20 overall record and 17-13 inside the SEC was enough to earn them the No. 4 overall seed in the NCAA Tournament. Thompson’s bunch had a clear path to Omaha, never having to leave home.

Getting through the Auburn Regional was a breeze, easily winning three consecutive games. However, a red-hot Coastal Carolina wound up sending the Tigers packing. Coastal Carolina went on to play in the College World Series championship series, dropping it to LSU. In honesty, a tough draw for Auburn, losing the Auburn Super Regional 2-0.

Expectations are going to remain high, though. Rogers added onto his report, giving his thoughts on where Auburn heads into the 2026 season. Spoiler alert — it’s something Auburn fans will love to hear.

“This all comes at a very good time for @AuburnBaseball,” Rogers said via X. “The Tigers should have a championship-contending club in 2026.”

Despite a good amount of success throughout its history, Auburn has yet to win a national championship. Six visits to Omaha have all fallen short, not even making the championship series. At some point, you have to imagine the Tigers are going to break through.

And athletic director Jon Cohen is betting on Thompson being the guy to get them there. Nothing is a better sign of confidence than a contract extension, especially one lasting as long as six seasons. Financial investment is always a nice asset to have as well. Thompson appears set for the years to come, both personally and within his program.
