On Friday, No. 10 Boise State defeated No. 20 UNLV 21-7 in the Mountain West Championship. The win solidified the Broncos’ spot in the College Football Playoff.

In the CFP selection committee’s latest rankings, Boise State landed at No. 10. Alas, barring a wild turn of events, Boise State will enjoy a first-round bye in the playoff since it will likely be the fourth highest-ranked conference champion.

After all, the Broncos didn’t give the selection committee any reason to doubt them on Friday night. As usual, Boise State running back Ashton Jeanty was spectacular in the win, amassing 209 rushing yards and a touchdown on 32 carries.

Jeanty wasn’t the only Bronco who shined in the victory. As UNLV focused its efforts on stopping Boise State’s run game, its pass defense softened. Boise State QB Maddux Madsen took full advantage of the opportunity, completing 18-of-his-27 pass attempts for 158 yards and a score.

Boise State’s defense also had a solid outing, holding the Rebels to 327 total yards of offense. The Broncos’ pass defense was particularly strong, allowing UNLV to connect on less than 50% of its pass attempts and convert just 5-of-its-16 third-down attempts.

While Boise State ultimately put on a convincing performance, it was far from perfect. The Broncos gave up 6.2 yards per rushing attempt to the Rebels. UNLV capitalized on this trend in the fourth quarter as it drove the ball into Boise State’s red zone.

Nonetheless, the Broncos’ defense held and, with a little help from their Heisman frontrunner, they ran into the sunset. Boise State can’t bask in the glory for too long. On Sunday, the selection committee will reveal the 12-team CFP bracket.

While there is no shortage of mysteries still ahead for how the bracket will shake out, the Broncos will certainly have a place in the playoff. The College Football Playoff Selection Show will be at noon ET on Sunday. It will be aired on ESPN.
