Bill O'Brien erupts on reporter after being asked for message to Boston College fans

A reporter asked Bill O’Brien for a message to Boston College fans, and the second-year head coach of the program didn’t mince words. He exploded at the notion that his Eagles aren’t headed in the right direction at the moment.
“I’m glad you’re down. I’m not down, nobody’s down. We’re fighting, we’re competing,” O’Brien stated. “It’s the second year of this program. You always come in here with these down questions. Once a month or something like that you come in here with these down questions. I’m not down. I don’t know what year you graduated from BC, but this is a program that we’re building.
“Nobody here is down. We’re positive. We’re going to show up and play our asses off against SMU. You can go out there in your dark-clouded world and do what you want to do, but we’re not down. The sun is up, and we’re fighting. That’s my message to the fans.”
Alas, the question was a valid one, as O’Brien’s outburst comes amid a difficult stretch for the Eagles. Boston College enters this week with a 1-8 overall mark and 0-5 in the Atlantic Coast Conference, the lowest rung in the league standings.
After a promising 7-6 finish in 2024, expectations were moderate, but the season has derailed quickly, cooling optimism among the fanbase. Despite the losses mounting, O’Brien asserts the program is still on track.

He emphasized the long view, as this is only year two of his tenure. It’s evident he’s urging fans to remain supportive rather than fatalistic.
As the calendar turns toward the final stretch of the schedule, Boston College still faces crucial games that will help define whether improvement is ahead or deeper decline is setting in. Coming up for the Eagles are a home matchup against SMU Mustangs, followed by games versus Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets and a road trip to Syracuse Orange.
As you can see though, O’Brien is drawing a line in the sand. He wants the narrative around the Eagles to shift from despair to their fighting spirit. Whether the team’s results will catch up to the message remains to be seen, but for now, “the sun is up” in Chestnut Hill, and O’Brien expects everyone around the program to act like it, even the media.
