Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney called the injury diagnosis for WR Bryant Wesco the best case scenario. Wesco was ruled out for the season due to a spine injury.

“The message was basically the same from both doctors, they’re all on the same page and so I think you’ve got a good plan going forward on what he needs to do,” Swinney said of Wesco’s recovery. “Everybody realizes he’s a very fortunate guy, because it could have been a lot worse. It’s not a situation like … Mike Williams. (He) had a fracture, and Justyn (Ross) was a completely different, totally different situation.

“But again, best case scenario for him. And you know, he’s doing good.”

Wesco has been one of the leading receivers in both of his seasons so far in Death Valley. He was their second-leading pass catcher last year with 41 receptions for 708 yards, averaging 59 per game and 17.3 a reception, and five touchdowns, and was their leading pass catcher this year with 31 receptions for 537 yards, posting 76.7 per game and again at 17.3 per catch, and six touchdowns. He also had added punt return duties on special teams, with 10 returns for 78 yards.

“They went up with his dad yesterday, and our trainers and so they’ve got a good plan going forward,” Swinney said. “And, you know, again, I hate it that he can’t play this season and, you know, we’ll be very cautious with him in the spring. You know, anticipate him being able to do everything, as far as training and running and all that type of stuff.

“They’ll keep him from any type of contact and that type of stuff until he’s ready to go next fall. So, you know, everything is positive at this point, but you know he’s still got to go through his process of what he’s got to do to get back and cleared to go play football.”

Wesco was hospitalized after suffering the injury against SMU earlier this season. But he’s anticipated to make a full recovery and eventually get back to playing next year, per Swinney.

As a member of the Class of 2024, Wesco was a four-star recruit out of Midlothian (Texas) High, according to the Rivals Industry Ranking. He was the No. 11 overall prospect in the state, the No. 13 wide receiver in the class and the No. 61 overall prospect in the class.
