Bryant Wesco injury update: Dabo Swinney reveals severity of spinal issue for Clemson WR

Clemson WR Bryant Wesco Jr. exited Saturday’s game with an injury suffered during his lone punt return, with it later being reported as a spinal issue after landing on his neck. Now, Dabo Swinney has shared the latest on the sophomore receiver.
In a teleconference on Monday afternoon, Swinney revealed that Wesco is out for the season because of that injury he had this weekend. Thankfully, though, it wasn’t as significant as it could have been, considering it was related to his spine.
“Injury-wise, prayers answered on Bryant Wesco. Just a blessing. Best-case scenario. It was a very scary injury. The doctors did an amazing job. Very scary injury and a lot of unknowns for the first 24 hours. He’s back home now. Best-case scenario,” Swinney said. “Now, he’s done for the year, for sure. But the doctors are confident he’ll make a full recovery…He got home today and was just kind of resting. He’ll be back over here tomorrow.”
Wesco has been one of the leading receivers in both of his seasons so far in Death Valley. He had been their second-leading pass catcher last year with 41 receptions for 708 yards, averaging 59 per game and 17.3 a reception, and five touchdowns, and now he was their leading pass catcher this year so far with 31 receptions for 537 yards, posting 76.7 per game and again at 17.3 per catch, and six touchdowns. He also had added punt return duties on special teams, with 10 returns for 78 yards.

TigerIllustrated further reported on the injury to Wesco on Sunday based on the latest on him after going to a hospital in Greenville. This is now the first official update on him since being hospitalized overnight on Saturday, following the 35-24 loss for Clemson (3-4, 2-3) to SMU (5-2, 3-0).
When you start discussing an injury to the spine, that could end up being very significant for a player on and off the field. However, after a lot of testing and evaluation on him, Wesco, who will unfortunately miss the rest of his season either way, does sound like he’ll be alright after since returning from the hospital.
“Definitely something that will keep him out for the rest of this season. All indications are he’ll be OK,” said Swinney. “Just a real blessing.”
