What USF transfer David Collins brings to Clemson hoops

Even with spring football over, there is still plenty going on at Clemson. Senior writer Matt Connolly is ready to answer whatever questions you might have. You can submit your question for the “Question of the Day” here. Today’s question is about Clemson basketball and the transfer portal.

Clemson picked up a big-time transfer addition Tuesday afternoon as USF guard David Collins committed to the Tigers.

Collins was a three-year starter at USF who led the Bulls in scoring each of the past three seasons.

At 6-foot-4 he fills a big need for Clemson as a bigger guard who can create his own shot and create for his teammates. The Tigers’ top two returning guards are small in Nick Honor (5-10) and Al-Amir Dawes (6-2).

“I feel like it’s a good fit for me. I can come be a versatile player here, combo guard. The coaches really were welcoming,” Collins told ClemsonSports.com. “It felt like a good place I could come to. It was an easy decision.”

Collins also received interest from Kansas, Kansas State, Arizona State and several others before choosing Clemson.

He hopes to come in and help the Tigers get back to the NCAA Tournament for the second consecutive year.

“They were in the tournament last year, so it’s not like they’re not a proven team. I just wanna come and be an additional asset to them,” Collins said. “They have a lot of shooters, guys that can spread the floor. I feel like with good spacing it’s going to be easy to make plays. You’ve got guys who can score all over the place.”

Collins added that he is confident his game will transfer over to the ACC, and he will be able to make plays consistently for the Tigers.

He scored 10 points in a game against Virginia Tech this past season and also put up 18 points, five rebounds and four assists against eventual Final Four participant Houston.

“I had a good time here, some good years… but after four years here I wanted to try somewhere else,” Collins said. “I feel like I can play on any level. It’s just about winning for me. That’s why I’m coming here. We’ve got good pieces and we can really put something together as a team.”
