Former Clemson wide receiver inks deal with Washington Football Team

CLEMSON — Former Clemson wide receiver Adam Humphries inked a one-year deal Thursday with the Washington Football Team.

Terms haven’t been announced yet. He visited with the franchise on Thursday .

Humphries was released from his contract with the Tennessee Titans last month to save approximately $4.47 million in salary-cap space. He only played in seven games in 2020, missing four games after a Week 8 hit from Cincinnati Bengals safety Jessie Bates resulted in a concussion. Humphries finished last season with 23 catches for 228 yards and two touchdowns.

The six-year NFL veteran went undrafted out of Clemson, where he played 57 games from 2011 to 2014, hauling in 127 receptions for 1,097 yards and three touchdowns. His best season came in 2013, his junior year, when he played 12 games and logged 41 receptions for 483 yards and two scores.

Humphries won an ACC championship during his time at Clemson and was a member of the 2013 Orange Bowl team.

Humphries wasn’t invited to the NFL Combine out of Clemson. But he impressed the Tamp Bay Buccaneers at rookie minicamp in 2015, eventually signing a three-year, $1.57 million contract with the organization. In his four seasons as a Buccaneer, the wideout played 60 games and caught nine touchdown passes.

After the 2018 season — when he posted 76 receptions for 816 yards and five touchdowns — Humphries signed a four-year, $36 million contract with Tennessee. He caught 60 passes for 602 yards and four touchdowns in 19 games as a Titan.

Humphries has hauled in 279 passes for 2,931 yards and 13 touchdowns during his NFL career.

His addition rounds out WFT’s offense. Quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick now has a true, reliable slot receiver who he previously worked with in Tampa Bay. Washington recently signed Curtis Samuel, too, but Samuel is expected to be used in various roles. Partnered with Terry McLaurin on the outside, Humphries addition gives the WFT a notable wide receiver corps.
