Dabo Swinney reveals Ian Schieffelin is no longer with Clemson team ahead of Pinstripe Bowl
Clemson Tigers head coach Dabo Swinney recently had media availability ahead of the Pinstripe Bowl. There, Swinney shared that tight end Ian Schieffelin won’t be with the team for the Pinstripe Bowl against Penn State.
Swinney initially listed several Clemson players who would be missing for the game. Only later, he’d remember to include Schieffelin, who isn’t with the team.
“I don’t think I left anybody out,” Dabo Swinney said. “Schieffelin. I think I left Ian out. Ian is not with us. He’s done.”
Dabo Swinney would quickly be asked to further clarify the Ian Schieffelin situation. However, he declined to do so. Instead, Swinney said, “I’ll let him speak for himself.”
Ian Schieffelin is best known for being the Clemson athlete who played for both the basketball team and the football team. As a basketball player, he had been a Second-Team All-ACC selection in 2025. Following the 2024-25 basketball season, he entered the Transfer Portal, hoping to have a fifth season of eligibility granted, but backed off of that plan. Instead, he made a move over to the Clemson football program under Dabo Swinney.

“I don’t know exactly,” Schieffelin said about the switch to football. “I’m pretty sure one of my dad’s friends called him and reached out about the idea of it. I don’t really know how it came up but it was one of those things where I was told about it when [Dabo Swinney] called me that night. I really thought about it and I had some good meetings with NBA teams and good little trajectories about where you could be in four to five years. But overall I prayed on it and went with my gut and decided on joining the football team.”
The 2025 season got off to a rocky start for Schieffelin. He would be arrested on suspicion of DUI in August, which led to a one-game suspension. For his part, Swinney would say, “You grow from it. It’ll be a learning experience.”
Ultimately, Schieffelin would appear in eight games for Clemson at tight end. He had two receptions for 10 yards. For his part, as Swinney suggested, he has not yet shared what’s next in his own future. Statistically, that was just fourth on the team in receiving yards among tight ends and 14th overall in receiving yards.
Clemson is prepping for the Pinstripe Bowl against Penn State. Kickoff for that game is scheduled for 12:00 p.m. EST on December 27th.
