Standout Clemson defensive back Avieon Terrell has been an integral piece of the Tigers’ defense over the past two seasons, as he’s recorded 77 tackles, five TFL, one sack, three interceptions and 16 pass deflections in 27 career games. He’s expected to be one of the top defensive backs selected in the 2026 NFL Draft.

NFL Draft analyst Todd McShay, now with The Ringer, discussed Terrell as a prospect and pointed out his flaws earlier this month during an edition of “The McShay Show.”

“He was sixth on the team with 58 tackles, 12 pass breakups and two interceptions last year,” McShay said. “5-foot-11, 180 pounds. I actually think there’s the top two defensive linemen we just talked about (Peter Woods and T.J. Parker), then there’s a gap, then there’s Terrell. But then there’s a significant gap with the rest of these (defensive guys in terms of NFL Draft prospects).

“I think Terrell is a day two player right now. I had him late in the first round in my mock, but probably wouldn’t put him there right now as I’ve gone through the whole class. But I’d have him in the second round.”

McShay claims Terrell is ‘inconsistent’ at times

Terrell had a standout sophomore season in 2024, as he was second in the ACC with 12 passes defended and three forced fumbles. He was named Second Team All-ACC last season for his efforts.

“I like him a lot but I see the flaws,” McShay continued. “Really good in off-coverage I thought. He can explode out of his petal. He really can. Good body control around the ball (for the most part). I really liked him driving on the ball and I think he’s athletically quick and sudden and all of those things. I think he’s got ‘easy speed’ and I preach that a lot.

“Whether you’re a receiver or a corner, there’s a difference between whether or not you’re 4.3 or you’re an ‘easy’ 4.3 or 4.4. ‘Easy speed’ is critical because when the ball is in the air, it allows you to be going this fast and be under control. There’s a difference, and he’s got easy speed.”

Clemson is expected to have one of the best defenses in the nation this season due to its immense talent and returning depth. The Tigers ranked 51st in the country last season in points per game allowed (23.4) and 69th in the country in yards per game allowed (374.1).

“I actually think he’s a good form tackler, but the problem is he gets there and wraps up but has got to hold on for the cavalry to come in because he can’t finish them off,” McShay said. “He shows some pop at times but he’s too inconsistent.”

Clemson opens the 2025 season at home against LSU on Aug. 30. Kick-off is scheduled for 7:30 PM on ABC.
