Game 2 of the College World Series finale between Coastal Carolina and LSU had some fireworks early in the showdown. Chanticleers head coach Kevin Schnall and first base coach Matt Schilling were ejected in controversial fashion, and Rece Davis is taking the umpire who made the decision to task.

The ESPN analyst was not a fan of the official making himself such a large part of the game on the grandest stage in all of college baseball. Davis proclaimed the entire ordeal was “ridiculous” and called for the umpire to be removed in the future.

“(It was a ) ridiculous ump show thing,” Davis stated, regarding the ejection via the College GameDay Podcast. “LSU was a better team and deserved to win in all of that. But I mean, this (umpire), he ejected somebody in a Super Regional for basically nothing — a player last year. He’s got to go, man.

“Unless his ball strike percentage, according to Trackman, is like 99.9%, then he needs some behavioral therapy. That guy’s got to go. Whoever that umpire is, he can’t be in big spots like that anymore.”

It’s tough to blame Davis for his opinion. Schnall appeared to be arguing balls and strikes with the home plate umpire, but he wasn’t given any grace, as the official wasted little time throwing out the Coastal Carolina head coach. Schilling’s ejection followed in short order.

Kyle Peterson, who was on the ESPN broadcast calling the game, wasn’t a fan of the decision either. He stated that it was “too quick” and that the umpire should’ve considered the situation as a whole at the time.

“I just — I don’t like it,” Peterson stated during the game. “We can’t hear everything that’s said. The rule says you can’t argue balls and strikes. So if you want to go straight by the rule, then okay, but you never go straight by the rules.

“… I mean, it was Kevin Schnall did not exactly walk back into the dugout. It started at first base with his first base coach and ultimately, that’s who was going to get the warning and then it took on from there. I still think it’s too quick.”

In the end, Coastal Carolina couldn’t overcome all the adversity, and LSU would win the College World Series for the second time in three seasons. Regardless, the treatment of their coaches left a bad taste in the mouth of Chanticleers fans and college baseball fans as a whole over the weekend.
