Urban Meyer: Every AD is trying to figure out what Deion Sanders, Colorado just did

Urban Meyer is quite impressed with Deion Sanders and Colorado through two weeks and now everyone else wants to do what the Buffaloes are doing.

The roster transformation is uncanny by today’s standards. But with what Sanders did so far, college football might have a new formula to rebuild a roster, and rebuild it fast.

Meyer explained how this could change athletic director’s tunes around the nation.

“Following Coach Prime around and Colorado the last couple of weeks and we’re going back through this week, it’s a story that in my lifetime, I’ve never seen anything like what I’ve witnessed,” Meyer said on Urban’s Take with Tim May. “Colorado might have been the worst program in the last decade. That team last year was 1-11, they were outscored by 400 points, and now they’re 2-0 and if they stay healthy, they’re gonna win a bunch of games this year.”

It may be a new way of building a team, but right now only one man can do it at this pace: Deion Sanders.

“Yeah, and I talked to some guys about that, I think every AD, this is the new, the grand experiment’s working,” Meyer said. “The ability to just change rosters like that, I’m not sure that’s good for anyone. It’s good for Colorado. You start kicking 50-60 players off the team and guys quitting, you know, I just worry about that a little bit.

“That’s gonna be the new normal. There’s gonna be a lot of hurt feelings here. So I’m interested to see how this thing moves forward, but you’re right, every AD in the country is gonna look for this … But,tThere’s only one there’s only one Deion Sanders.”

Urban Meyer impressed by Deion Sanders, thinks college football could change drastically in response

Is this good for college football? Meyer thinks so, but everything comes at a price.

“It is,” Meyer said. “I worry sometimes that you know, it’s too much … The one thing about the Deion Sanders though, is he’s hired an excellent coaching staff and I saw that 15 minutes when I was at practice. I remember texting my colleague on Big Noon Kickoff and saying that this is real.

“This is not some facade or this is some nonsense, this is a real coach with a real coaching staff and some really good players that worked really hard. And we all know that equates to, that equates to winning. So it’s great for Colorado. It’s great for college football. Every AD right now is trying to figure out how to do what Colorado just did.”
