Deion Sanders, Colorado hiring LSU staffer Corey Phillips as director of player personnel

Colorado has had quite the culture shift over the last week. They went from ending their season at 1-11 to becoming the story of the college football world after hiring Deion Sanders away from Jackson State to be the next head coach of the Buffaloes. With so many prospects now interested in Boulder, the program needs someone to spearhead that effort and, now, it seems Sanders has found the man for the job.

Per On3’s Matt Zenitz, Colorado has hired Corey Phillips from LSU as their director of player personnel. Phillips spent last season in a similar role for Brian Kelly’s staff in Baton Rouge as the associate director of player personnel.

Phillips’ efforts at LSU helped the Tigers put together the No. 6 class for 2023 per the On3 Consensus. The class featured 23 overall commitments with 17 coming with four-star prospects.

This will now be Phillips’ fourth landing spot in the last several seasons. He took his first college job in 2016 at Vanderbilt and followed that up with a scouting job at NC State. That led to the LSU gig which has now become a role in Sanders’ program during the coach’s first season at the helm of a Power Five team.

The Colorado football fan base is as excited as they’ve been in the past two decades. Since the hire of former Jackson State head coach Deion Sanders, the Buffaloes have enjoyed an overwhelming infusion of excitement and interest from fans and elite football prospects in their program. On Thursday night, the Colorado fan base got their first taste of a public appearance from their new head football coach, when he was shown walking onto the floor and into the stands at the Colorado–Colorado State basketball game. The whole place erupted.
