While Colorado head coach Deion Sanders hasn’t named a starting quarterback yet, he hasn’t been afraid to sing QB Kaidon Salter‘s praises, either. On Friday, Sanders raved about the transfer quarterback.

“Kaidon is a guy with multiple talents,” Sanders said. “He can throw the football. He can run the heck out of the football. Sometimes in practice, you don’t get a chance to see how good he is because when you run the quarterback, you know we can’t hit him.

“But, you can see the burst, the speed, the knowledge of reading the defenses, and then he pulls it and keeps it. The kid is going to cause havoc. I’m just telling you.”

Salter transferred to Colorado this offseason after spending four seasons at Liberty, where he amassed 5,887 passing yards, 2,063 rushing yards and 77 total touchdowns. Salter was particularly spectacular in the 2023 campaign when he erupted for 2,876 passing yards and 32 touchdowns while only throwing six interceptions.

Salter’s standout statistics translated to the win column. Liberty went 12-0 in the 2023 regular season and won its conference championship. Now, Salter is hungry to bring similar success to Colorado.

“It’s going to be a totally different type of offense, kind of which from what you’ve seen us do in the past, because we had a guy that could spin it tremendously,” Sanders said. “But don’t underestimate his throwing ability.

“We just want him to complete every darn pass he throws in practice and get in a habit of completions, completions, completions, because we know he can run. But, when he gets that second part down, it’s going to be a problem, a tremendous problem for all defenses.”

Before Kaidon Salter can dream of winning a Big 12 championship at Colorado, he has to win the team’s quarterback competition. Salter is competing with freshman QB Julian Lewis for the starting spot behind center.

Lewis was a four-star prospect and the No. 7 quarterback in the 2025 recruiting cycle. Lewis has reportedly looked impressive this summer and Sanders has emphasized he’s in no rush to name Colorado’s QB1.

“I see us winning,” Sanders said. “I’m not looking that far down the line. I’m looking to have great practices by these two young men, and the cream of the crop is gonna rise. So it’s not an urgency that we got to name this and name that. Both these guys can play. I mean, I think we can play well with either one of them, but we want to put ourselves in the best position, totally.”
