Colorado has hit the ground running under Deion Sanders, even with Prime finishing up his season with Jackson State. After losing the Celebration Bowl on Saturday, all attention has been shifted to the Buffaloes, with a few key dates upcoming.

However, Sanders would not be able to navigate everything without officially announcing a staff. He did exactly that on Tuesday night, announcing all 10 on the field staff hires. A few have followed him to Colorado from Jackson but at the two coordinator positions, some big names were poached.

Colorado announces initial staff under Deion Sanders

  • Sean Lewis – Offensive coordinator/quarterbacks
  • Gary Harrell – Assistant head coach/running backs
  • Billy O’Boyle – Offensive line
  • Brett Bartolone – Wide receivers
  • Tim Brewster – Tight ends
  • Charles Kelly – Defensive coordinator/safeties
  • Andre’ Hart – Linebackers
  • Kevin Mathis – Cornerbacks
  • Nick Williams – Defensive ends
  • Dennis Thurman – Director of Quality Control | Defense

Of all the hires, pulling Lewis onto staff may be the most impressive from Sanders. Getting someone to leave an FBS program — even if it’s Kent State — when they have a head coach position is something people across the country will take notice of.

The expectation under Lewis is to play and put up a lot of points. He was able to have success with the Golden Flashes against MAC and will be hoping for translation in the Pac-12. With Shedeur Sanders running the offense the Buffaloes hope for significant improvement.

On the defensive end, Kelly will be joining Colorado via Tuscaloosa and the Alabama Crimson Tide. An important assistant for head coach Nick Saban, Kelly will get his chance to be a full-time defensive coordinator under Coach Prime.

Kelly has experience at other high-level programs as well, winning the national championship with Florida State during the 2013 season. Tennessee employed him as a special teams coach and safeties coach under Jeremy Pruitt.
