Shedeur Sanders is no stranger to clutch situations. Colorado’s comeback win over Colorado State was just another addition to his collection. After the triumph, Sanders recalled the moments that prepared him for the hairy situation.

“The biggest moments I remember were two moments,” Sanders said. “My dad was going through the thing with his foot. My freshman year we threw a game winning touchdown versus Southern. [Second, was] the Celebration Bowl last year.”

Learning moments

In Sanders’ freshman season, he led Jackson State to 10-point fourth-quarter comeback against Southern. In the win, Sanders delivered two touchdown passes to Malachi Wideman in the final six minutes of the game.

Jackson State won the game without head coach Deion Sanders after he underwent foot surgery. Obviously, Deion isn’t the only Sanders who knows how to lead a team. The more recent incident Shedeur mentioned was in 2022.

Although Jackson State lost to North Carolina Central in the 2022 Celebration Bowl, Shedeur was electric. The 6-foot-2 QB completed 30 of 40 passes for 349 yards and four touchdowns, including the game-tying 19-yard touchdown pass to Travis Hunter as time expired in regulation.

Despite his logic-defying antics, Sanders’ performance wasn’t enough to pick up the win. The junior QB wasn’t about to let history repeat itself against Colorado State.

“I already knew what was required,” Sanders said during the postgame press conference. “It’s like I’m not going to be able to live with myself honestly with a loss like that. I wouldn’t be able to sleep. I just didn’t want to go through that.”

Sanders delivered and then some. In the double-overtime victory, Sanders exploded for 348 passing yards and four touchdowns while completing 80.9% of his passes. The Colorado standout claims he was prepared for the moment.

“We do it in practice all the time, so it’s not really a shock or a surprise. We like those high-pressure moments,” Sanders said. “That’s what we live in, and I honestly wish the whole game was like that. That’s when I think we excel. In my own mind I was thinking about Brady. He does it all the time I got to be able to do it. Just talking to him and representing him in that way.”

Colorado will need Sanders’ to shine brighter than ever this weekend. On Saturday, Colorado will square off against the No. 10 Oregon Ducks at 12:30 p.m. PT. Sanders will go toe-to-toe with opposing QB Bo Nix. The game will be broadcast on ABC.
