Oregon head coach Dan Lanning made headlines with his pregame speech. In particular, the comments he made about the Colorado program caught a lot of people’s attention. Despite that, Colorado quarterback Shedeur Sanders dismissed the impact of that speech.

As Sanders explained, every coach says things to fire their players up but it doesn’t matter once the game starts.

“I think each team’s players would be fired up,” Shedeur Sanders said. “I don’t think one coach is gonna fire the players up more than the other because that fired up stuff goes out the window after the first kick.”

It was a long and difficult game for Shedeur Sanders. In Oregon’s 42-6 win over Colorado, Sanders threw for just 159 yards and a single touchdown. The Ducks also had seven sacks in the game.

For head coach Dan Lanning, the game seemed to be incredibly important to win. That much was obvious by those pregame comments. In particular, he seemed to target Deion Sanders in his speech to the Oregon team.

“Rooted in substance, not flash. Today we talk with our pads… The Cinderella story is over. They’re fighting for clicks, we’re fighting for wins,” Lanning said. Whether it was because of the speech or some other reason, Oregon did come out with its hair on fire and end Colorado’s Cinderella story. It was 35-0 by halftime and Lanning was calling for more out of his team.

After the game, Deion Sanders admitted that the Buffaloes got their butts kicked.

“It was a good, old-fashioned butt kicking. No excuses, no nothing. Their coaches did a heck of a job preparing their team. Obviously we didn’t. That was good — I mean that was a really good old-fashioned butt kicking,” Sanders said.

“We went into the game wanting to dominate phases. We lost offensively, defensively as well as special teams. That fake punt kind of got them really rolling and they didn’t stop ever since they secured that first down.”

Dan Lanning says he needs to humble himself

After the win over Colorado, Dan Lanning took time to reflect and consider the possible need to humble himself.

“I get passionate at times. I get a little excited about what I want to accomplish for our team. And I just wanna say, I need to humble myself a little bit,” Lanning said.

“This is one game, and I’m not satisfied. What I just told the players, we’re about to go play great a quarterback. We’re about to go play great teams moving forward, and it’s about how good we can become. Right? It’s not really about who we play, it’s about Oregon versus Oregon every week.”
