Travis Hunter recognizes being the first overall selection in the NFL Draft is something special to behold, and he’s yearning for the recognition.

The Colorado two-way superstar is readying for a potential Heisman coronation this weekend, with preparation for the 2025 NFL Draft to follow the Buffaloes’ bowl game later in December. While the first pick has been reserved for quarterbacks over the past decade and change, Hunter is hoping to buck that trend and make history when the time comes.

“It definitely matters. I want to be No. 1,” Hunter said, regarding whether he cares about being the first player selected come April 2025, via The Pivot Podcast. “First thing I said. That’s the first thing I dreamt of. I ain’t dreamt of winning the Heisman. I dreamt of being No. 1.

“You know, getting to that point where I’m about to be the No. 1 pick off the board? That’s what I want to be. Like I said, I’m the first to do it in my family, why not keep going and be the first (overall pick)?”

With a weaker quarterback class than usual in 2025, Hunter certainly has a shot to go first overall. It’s extremely rare to see a wide receiver or defensive back as the first player off the board, which are Hunter’s two positions, but a player who can line up at both throughout a game? He might be rare enough to shock the world.

Regardless, Hunter figures to be a top five pick, top ten at the worst. He’ll certainly be rewarded for his greatness, but the trend of quarterbacks going off the board first might be too hard to buck. Perhaps Hunter’s teammate, Shedeur Sanders, will be the first pick, or Miami star Cam Ward, who’s also in contention.

It’ll be fascinating to see how it all shakes out, and the order is bound to fluctuate throughout the draft process. Travis Hunter has one goal though, and that’s to make himself undeniable to whichever team is picking first overall next April.
