Report: Duke, Jon Scheyer agree to six-year extension through 2031

Duke and head coach Jon Scheyer have agreed on a six-year extension, which would keep him in Durham through the 2030-31 season, per ESPN‘s Pete Thamel. Duke has now made the deal official.
Scheyer succeeded legendary head coach Mike Krzyzewski following his retirement in 2022. He has led the program to an 89-22 (48-12) record over three seasons with an appearance in the 2025 Final Four.
“Coach K has given me amazing room to be myself,” Scheyer said back in April. “Really, the only advice he gave me from the beginning was to be true to me, to be true to myself. I already knew that. But for him to remind me of that from time to time has been important. I think he understands when he’s around just the gravity and the people looking at him and all that. But we’ve gotten to a point, one, our communication has been the same all the time.
“I’ll tell you for me, in the toughest moments that I’ve had as a head coach, my first three years, the person that I call is him. For him to talk me through different moments or situations, not many coaches still have their coach, and I do. I couldn’t be more grateful for that.”

Scheyer was a standout player at Duke from 2006-10 under Krzyzewski before joining the coaching staff as an assistant in 2014. He remained in that position until 2018, when he was promoted to Associate Head Coach. He kept this position until 2022, when he was named Coach K’s successor.
The 2024-25 season seemed like a true coming-out party for the program under Scheyer, as Duke went 35-4, won the ACC Tournament and made a run to the Final Four. They were led by National College Player of the Year Cooper Flagg, who was eventually selected with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2025 NBA Draft.
It appeared as if the Blue Devils were on their way to a spot in the National Championship Game against Florida, but they blew a 59-45 lead with 8:17 remaining in the game. Had it punched its ticket to the title game, Scheyer’s team would have reached the game two whole seasons before Coach K’s first team did.
