Florida has had a tendency to shoot itself in the foot at the worst times during the Billy Napier era and a costly penalty on Saturday against USF may have been the worst yet. Defensive lineman Brendan Bett was ejected for spitting on another player after a key defensive stop late in the fourth quarter.

The penalty and ejection granted USF 15 yards and a first down and put the Bulls firmly on the move, trailing 16-15 as the fourth quarter quickly came to a close. Following the penalty, USF chewed up the field and got deep into the red zone, with a chance to seal the win.

The penalty occurred when USF snapped the ball with 2:14 left on the clock at its own 24-yard line. Alvon Isaac ran to the right and was quickly corralled by Michai Boireau and Jayden Woods for no gain.

But near the play, Bett was getting up and he quickly got into the face of a USF lineman. Then he unleashed a giant wad of spit on him.

The penalty immediately came out. Bett was ejected. And Florida’s chances to secure the win took an immediate nosedive. You can view the spitting ejection below.

After the penalty and the ejection, USF finished off the game by getting inside the 5-yard line and turning to kicker Nico Gramatica. Gramatica fired good from 20 yards out, giving USF the 18-16 upset over No. 13 Florida.

Second spitting incident this week

The spitting incident by Brendan Bett was the second one this week, which might make it all the more confounding. The highly visible Thursday Night Football game between the Dallas Cowboys and Philadelphia Eagles also included a spitting incident.

Unlike the Florida-USF one, this one came early in the game, on the very first defensive play. That’s when defensive lineman Jalen Carter for the Eagles spit on Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott.

Like Bett, Carter was immediately ejected from the contest. Something tells us more than one or two coaches might be dropping a line about spitting in a team meeting next week.
