With its back against the wall, Florida came out swinging — literally. The Gators scored 24 runs against LSU on Sunday in an elimination game to set up a winner-take-all Game 3 for the national championship on Monday.

The 24 runs are the most that have ever been scored in a College World Series game. Florida also had 23 hits in its 24-4 victory, which ties a College World Series record.

After the game, Gators stars Jac Caglianone and Wyatt Langford spoke about what led to the offensive outburst. The performance came a day after Florida managed only three runs in 11 innings against LSU in a 4-3 loss.

“We couldn’t really take what happened yesterday into today. We played with our backs against the wall before,” Caglianone said. “Really just went up there stress-free, taking it one pitch at a time.”

As Caglianone mentioned, this isn’t the first time Florida has been faced with a do-or-die game.

In the Gainesville Regional, the Gators lost to Texas Tech in the winners bracket game and ended up facing three elimination games. They won them all, beat South Carolina in a super regional and are now one win away from a national title.

“We did exactly what we said we were going to do — flush last night and come in today ready to play,” Langford said. “The balls were falling for us today. And that’s just kind of how it went.”

Florida slugger Jac Caglianone shatters BBCOR era single-season HR record

The Florida Gators obliterated the LSU Tigers on Sunday night during their Game 2 matchup in the College World Series Finals. The Gators had to win on Sunday to force a decisive Game 3 and they did not mess around, delivering a performance that won’t be forgotten for quite some time.

Florida annihilated LSU 24-4, setting numerous records in the process. The Gators took a 19-3 lead in the bottom of the eighth inning, thanks to a record-breaking two-run home run from their slugger, Jac Caglianone. He’s one of the best two-way players in all of college baseball and on Sunday evening, he stamped his name in the record books. Caglianone shattered the BBCOR era single-season home run record after he destroyed his 33rd home run of the season.

It was his second home run of what was basically a home run derby for the Florida Gators. Both he and Ty Evans finished with two home runs each for the Gators in their historic performance on Sunday.

Caglianone was a Golden Spikes Award finalist this year, becoming just the sixth player from Florida to be named a Golden Spikes Award finalist and the first Gator since Brady Singer did it in 2018. The gifted two-way player also earned MVP honors for the 2023 Gainesville Regional.
