Florida defensive back Dijon Johnson will not face criminal charges following an arrest in May. According to a report from Graham Hall of 247Sports, the Florida State Attorney’s Office has elected not to file charges related to the incident.

Johnson was arrested May 2 on multiple charges, according to the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office. He was later released on a surety bond, documents showed.

Johnson was charged with possession of a firearm during commission of a felony and possession of a controlled substance – a Class 2 and Class 3 felony, respectively. He was also potentially facing misdemeanor charges of possession of cannabis less than 20 grams and resisting an officer without violence.

At the time, Florida issued a statement noting it was monitoring the situation. The statement read:

“We are aware of the situation of Dijon Johnson. We will continue to gather facts, cooperate with and monitor the legal and administrative processes.”

Earlier this summer, Johnson returned to team activities and remained in summer school classes following his arrest. The Orlando Sentinel reported that news.

According to the Sentinel, Johnson was set to face internal discipline in the program. The specifics were unclear.

Regardless, the news on Monday is exceptionally positive for Florida. Johnson is involved in one of the team’s most heated position battles going into fall camp, and he could be a vital piece in the secondary this season.

On3 Florida insider Zach Abolverdi recently shared a nugget on Johnson’s progress and that competition in an in-depth insider piece for GatorsOnline. He wrote:

“The competition between cornerbacks Cormani McClain and Dijon Johnson to start opposite Devin Moore could be the most heated position battle in all of camp. McClain had a breakout spring and took all the first-team reps with Johnson sidelined. Johnson is back in action and had a very strong summer according to multiple sources, with one commending him for how hard he’s worked since his offseason arrest. He was named “King of the Swamp” for Week 5 of summer workouts by Miles.

“Johnson played the most snaps among Florida’s cornerbacks last season (550) and likely has the edge over McClain, who played significantly less (111 snaps). But McClain could have the highest ceiling of any corner on the team, and he’s put himself in position to realize his potential.”

On3’s Nick Schultz and Zach Abolverdi also contributed to this report.
