Gardner-Webb led Chattanooga for virtually the entire game, only to watch a buzzer-beater from half court hand the Mocs a 69-66 win.

The Bulldogs built as big a lead at 16 points but ultimately let the Mocs keep it close down the stretch. And guard Trey Bonham, a Florida transfer, did the heroics late.

With time ticking down, Bonham received an in-bounds pass around midcourt, ducked beneath one defender and then fired a shot over another. It banked off the backboard and dropped in, giving Chattanooga the win.

Bonham scored 15 points in the game, helping keep the Mocs in it. Jan Zidek led Chattanooga in scoring with 27 points in the contest.

For Bonham, the buzzer-beater should be a significant shot in the arm.

A former VMI and Florida player, Bonham transferred to Chattanooga this offseason after playing somewhat sparingly for the Gators last season. He logged just 13.4 minutes per game for Florida last year.

This year, he’s likely to get significantly more run.

However, Trey Bonham had played in only one contest before tonight’s game against Gardner-Webb. He logged 18 minutes in that first contest, scoring 14 points, dishing out three assists and pulling down one rebound.

He got 32 minutes against the Bulldogs and turned in the 15 points, seven rebounds and an assist.

During his lone season at Florida, Bonham averaged 5.6 points across 30 appearances, which included 13 starts. He shot 32.9% from 3-point range and racked up 22 steals. He had eight double-digit scoring performances.

He arrived at Florida after spending his first two years at VMI.

While at VMI, Bonham was an integral part of the team’s offense. He was a Southern Conference All-Freshman selection in 2020-21, when he averaged 8.6 points per game and shot 50.3% from the floor.

As a sophomore in 2021-22, Bonham really saw an uptick in production. he averaged 13.6 points, 4.4 rebounds and 4.0 assists per game, starting in all 29 games that he appeared in.

It won’t be every night that Bonham hits a buzzer-beater, but it has to feel good after a few years journeying around.
